This documents the conference that created modern Europe's borders
Margaret MacMillan's writing style is very easy to follow. Her book "The War that ended Peace" described the events leading up to the First World War. This book (Paris 1919) describes how the victorious powers decided to rearrange the borders of the successor nations to Germany, Austria-Hungary and Czarist Russia. Some of the borders were created by the successor nations and were simply ratified by the Big Four of Great Britain, the USA, France and Italy. Others were created by events on the ground; all were overseen (if not approved) by the Big Four. What is evident in Ms MacMillan's books is that individual personalities and prejudices affected the outcomes as much as proclaimed principles. Furthermore, she explains oddities such as Hungary ending up under an Admiral as head of government. She also describes how France sought to get reparations to rebuild its eastern regions after the war ... and laid the foundations for the next one.I haven't finished the book yet--but it is a fascinating read, well worth the time invested. This is not simply history, but an exploration of how the rest of the 20th century developed ...

Fascinating history of this momentous year
I'm only a short way into this book but I can feel the meticulous research that has gone into creating it. I've learned much about Wilson, Lloyd-George and Clemenceau as seen through the lens of this author's work. It's amazing the amount of politics that surrounded the Paris Peace Conference and the many national representatives that clamoured to have their voices and wishes heard outside the 'Big Three'. Also fascinating was the faltering engagement with Russia at the time as Bolshevism took hold in that country. Who knows how history might have been altered had the everyone really come together to sort out the post-WW1 world? I am looking forward to continuing my reading however this is going to take many, many nights!
