I am an avid canner/dehydratorer and have always sliced my mushrooms by hand when preparing them for these projects. I was faced with the dilemma of being overzealous when they were on sale at the grocery store, and I decided I better find an easier way to accomplish this job. I figured there had to be an easier way other than slicing them by hand.I read the reviews of several mushroom slicers and chose this one. (Actually it's a soft vegetable slicer.). I chose wisely. It simplified my afternoon project and I was amazed at how easy and quickly this sliced my mushrooms! The slices are about 3/8s inch wide and all perfectly cut. I am sure it would do a small to medium tomato just as easily, but I didn't have one to try out. I did try an onion - no bueno. When they said soft vegetables, they meant it. :-)This is one of those gadgets that I would recommend to my friends, especially those who can and dehydrate like I do. It is sturdy and the blades are razor sharp - ask my finger. Can't wait to try it on tomatoes!!Disclaimer: I am Karl's wife, not Karl. This slicer works fairly well for soft fruits and vegetables. The biggest problem I've had with it is that if the blades are even a little off-kilter, they will slice into the plastic of the cradle. Once that has happened, the blade will always get stuck, unless you shave off the plastic bits. It's pretty easy for this to happen, especially if you are slicing something large that blocks your view of the plastic.The slicer definitely speeds up slicing for me. I've used it with nectarines, strawberries, grapes, tomatoes, and mushrooms, so far. I find that the slices are a bit thicker than I would like, but the increased speed of prep is a reasonable trade off. My 6 year old can also use the slicer, with some supervision, so it's a nice way to let kids help in the kitchen.I also used this for chopping cherry tomatoes and grapes into safe chunks for my toddler - a very fast way to do an otherwise tedious job!

For this granny in the kitchen, I am always on the lookout for gadgets and specialty tools that help compensate for the increasing limits to my strength and coordination. I have tried different ways to slice both hard and soft vegetables, even sending back some cutters that required a bit more alacrity than I possess. This soft vegetable cutter is safe, no exposed blades, stable, with the wider support tray, and requires very little pressure to cut down through a fresh tomato. I like that the fruit rests inside and then you use both hands to gently rock the cutter section down through it. Yes, the slices are about 1/4", which for me, is perfect for a burger, sandwich or on top of pizza. The support tray catches the extra juice and seeds, and then can be poured off after every few tomatoes are cut. Great gadget!

Works pretty well. Doesn't cut through mushrooms as well as I'd hoped. Often there are pieces of the mushroom left behind. Also, I recommend taking the stems off and placing the mushroom cap facing down (the way it grows) top up and bottom down and pushing the cutting blades down at a slight angle from front to back to kind of "catch" the edge of the mushroom on the serrated blades so that the blades slice it instead of just smoosh it.

I have been looking for a sturdy veggie slicer. All the others have thin wires which break. This slicer actually has serrated blades which slice through veggies like butter. My only complaint is the blades are too far apart resulting in thicker slices. Otherwise a GREAT product!

I have now purchased three of these and like them so much that I give them away as gifts to my fellow tomato-garden enthusiasts.We harvest hundreds of tomatoes and this Maestoware Slicing gadget sure makes things easier when prepping them for eating. I use mine every day. Makes beautiful slices - far better than I could do on my own. Everything is quick & easy. I absolutely love this gadget. It makes sliding tomatoes fun!

All in all it works. Tomatoes have to be on the firm side or they fall apart. Apples slice perfectly. Hard boiled eggs slice well. Easy clean up.

I love this little mushroom chopper. That is what I use it for. My pampered chef finally broke after many years and I needed a replacement. Very nice, well designed and works great. I have not sliced anything else with it though. I would buy again if I needed to. Thought about buying it as a gift for a new kitchen.
