A good base to cover gray
Love these temporary rinses, if I get the color right, as I use this to cover my gray before applying Gray Away Color sticks (purchased from Amazon, too) to add streaks like my frosting. This is kind of a combination review because I finish blending my gray hair using Gray Away color quick sticks too, and have posted this there as well. But I start with this as the base. The first photo is a winter photo, I live in the Florida Keys, and the topknot photo just shows a little of my back underneath brunette hair but most of it is my blonde frosting heavier around the face in the summer. I brush on the Roux Fanciful "Spun Sand" temporary rinse first over the gray but it makes the hair ALL one/same color which does not look natural at all encouraging me to apply Gray Away Color Sticks streaks after it is pretty dry to match the rest of my hair and it's super easy (doesn't even take 5 minutes!), like hand coloring, and I use 3 colors: Black to dark brown; Light brown (which is a little reddish) and Lightest Brown/Medium Blonde, the latter of which I use to cover most of the starting point where the gray hair is just emerging from the follicle at the nearest edge to the face. I'll try to remember to take a photo of my gray starting point, because I've got a good 1 1/2" - 2" of SOLID WHITE hair at my facial hairline that just disappears with these products - as you can see in the two photos. As the Gray Away Color sticks streaking might fade through brushing and handling the Roux rinse is a great base that covers the gray until washed out and make a huge difference. It keeps the blended look until next hair washing and I can add more streaks whenever needed.Update: Shocking to read 1-star reviews that this doesn't cover gray, and you can see how gray my hair is before application in the photo provided. What people may not realize is that you have to SHAKE THE BOTTLE REALLY WELL. I mean SHAKE the HECK out of it - I always put my finger over the top of the applicator just in case but I get quite a workout shaking it - makes me laugh I am shaking it SO hard. And once I finished, I SHAKE IT AGAIN. And there is my Photo progression added, (1) winter hair face-only photo, (2) topknot and roots finished with Spun Sand base/color sticks applied, almost dry (3) gray hair starting point, (4) just spun sand base applied over gray- looking wet still, (5) finished sitting portrait with current hair base/sticks (gray IS gone!) I also separate my top most light blonde area and clip it out of the way and apply spun sand through the back and sides of the rest of my hair for those errant long gray strands showing up, and it turns them a light blonde too. WORKS FOR ME, YES IT DOES!Update: For those with gray hair who may have commented it does not cover, my gray is very FINE so it DOES cover but I know there is some gray hair that is very coarse and those are not going to absorb this tint near as well as my fine hair - for a fact. I can only add, it is worth a try and I do towel dry/blot before applying the Spun Sand Rinse so it is full strength on the hair strands and not diluted in any way. If I had coarse hair, I might towel dry or even totally air dry, apply, saran wrap it and apply heat for 5 - 10 minutes to see if that would make a difference.

I like it. Here’s some advice I have for you…
I have very, very pale hair. I used to use this (when it came in a pink bottle) all through my twenties every day in the shower - after my shower so I didn’t make a mess in the rest of the bathroom. I searched and searched t lo find it again after my hair went white. My hairdresser was charging me $300 a month to try to maintain blonde hair since I could no longer try to pretend I ever had brown hair.I’ve been using this for a few months now and here are some things I can tell you…It doesn’t make my hair brown. It barely makes it blonde. I can manage to load it on 4 times at my roots to sort of look dark blonde at the roots (after dry because it looks black when I put it on wet). It’s very, very liquidy, which I think is the problem with this product. It’s a mess! It stains my hands and the sink and anything else it gets on, but not my hair.It goes in and stays in until I want it out.I can blow dry and style my hair and add my Leaf oil and it doesn’t cause any issues with other products.I use leaf shampoo and conditioner and hair oil they I buy from the salon. My hair is no longer dyed anc it has about 5 inches of root growth that is almost completely whiter. This stuff does tint my hair a yellow-blonde after it’s been completely washed out. I don’t mind it though because at least it isn’t white! My hair glows, and that’s been added to by using this because the bits I can get at least some color darker than the palest blonde.I would consider the darkest I can make my hair is medium to dark blonde with 4 coats in one try. I sleep with it in and it doesn’t get on anything but my hair comb and brush after it is dry.I use gloves after I shower to get as much as I can on the roots and I pull some through from roots to ends to try to look more natural of like I get it done at the salon. It takes a lot of effort and applications to get my hair to turn mostly just medium blonde. The color I use is called Chocolate Kiss and it’s supposed to be dark brown. That’s the darker of the 2 I bought because the plush one was too orange and pale and I didn’t like that at all.I wash down the sink and anywhere it gets on IMMEDIATELY because IT STAJNS FAST on the sink especially.I plan to use this every day until I die. It’s lasting a really long time, seeming like I may only need to buy 2 a year, even with as much of it as I use. It says semi-permanent, anc I can’t dye my hair every week at the salon or in a box, so this is the best product of alllll I’ve tried (hair makeups, color sprays, the large wax pencils, hair powders, eyeshadows, facial powders - I have tried everything!!!) — this is the only product that doesn’t anger my scalp, and I like the results when I get on well. Sometimes I’m not sure if I put too much in at my roots and not enough everywhere else because it looks black but I end up needing to add more, which I do the next day, not after I already dried and styled my hair!I like it. I think finding the color you like best for your hair is the recommendation I have if you don’t like the first one you try. I did A LOT of research to see each color in action via Google searches before I decided on the 2 I tried and I had to go with the darkest of my choices to get the results I like.

Great temporary color.
New packaging, but the product seems to be the same. Great for quick root touch up & stays put until you wash it out. If you pick color close to your own, it blends in quite well. Nice to have on hand.

It's not what it used to be
It's okay, but does leave a mauve color to my all gray hair. It does wash out with one wash of clarifying shampoo.

Tones down my "white stripes" the best. (For med blonde hair)
I've been using Roux rinse on the front pieces of my hair for years. I have medium blonde hair, and those front stripes of hair have gotten lighter and lighter, now to a white. This Black has been a surprising discovery. It tones those front stripes to a nice blonde better than any of the other (lighter) colors. Some colors will make it too reddish or too yellow. Those of you familiar with this Roux product know that it "tones", - it does not "color" hair
