How long does this knife last with regular daily use?

I've had mine for at least 20 years and use it every day from March - October. It's still going strong, with at least another 20 years of life in it. My garden is about 7000 sf. This Nisaku hori hori is a true workhorse. It's perfect.

Given the lack of a crossguard, has anyone experienced cuts from their grip slipping while gardenning?

I've used it a lot for brutal digging of old and very thick compacted sod with helatious weeds and have never slippped down. I use it in an underhanded stab/digging motion away from me, in an overhanded, downward stab/dig on the far side of the clumps, like slaying a vampire, but I also stab and spin it around the clumps -- for THAT it is a-may-zing. Since I haven't had it slip with all that, I, personally, wouldn't give it another thought. What I DO caution is to be conscious and use care with activites that involve using your OTHER hand too closely, it IS wickehd shahp. I came close when holding a clump whilst jabbing at it with the other hand. No question to me, it's best garden tool ever!

Is both sides of the blade smooth or is one smooth and one serrated? I saw a program about this knife, and the ones they used had serrated on one side

One side is smooth, the other serrated. You didn't ask, but it might be helpful to know that the blade is slightly curved (not a scimitar curve, curved like the side of a cylinder).
