Phil Jiminez - A Great Choice to Follow Perez
For one, Phil Jimenez can draw. Each page pops. A consummate illustrator, he has a style descended from that of George Perez, whose Wonder Woman redo post-Crisis set the bar high. I rank the artist near to the likes of José Luis García-López, Carmine Infantino, and since I love some hyperbole Scott Kolins on Flash when it comes to distilling a character's visual essence. A post-Teen Titans Perez and Mr. Jimenez do just that: render a Greek, feminine Wonder Woman, absent cheesecake, who retains a raw combination of beauty and power of the sort Gal Gadot will later channel in spades. You many know his work on Infinite Crisis, some New X-Men, I believe, and The Invisibles. My daughter, all of eight and quite a sound illustrator in her own right, went nuts for his take on Wonder Woman and Wonder-Girl. A solid writer, Jiminez and Loeb's "Our Worlds at War" story arc, which seems to have been largely forgotten, is wildly under-rated in this guy's book, as are the comics of the early 2000s in general. We get to sample the Superman - Wonderwoman relationship this reader believes inevitable in the future, as forecasted (in non-canonical "Kingdom Come," not like canon means anything to me) by Mark Waid. Here is something a bit more important, though: a response I'm quoting from Jiminez when his work received some criticism:"Good doesn’t mean “not flawed.” It simply means that Wonder Woman, like Superman, is relatively incorruptible. We’ve seen her quick to anger, jealous, sad, make mistakes, be naïve, etc. – all very human mistakes."But she works far less well, as both character and as icon, when one tries to bring her humanity into sociopathic territory. She is good, she represents good, and that’s okay. I think the tendency to rail against “good heroes” says much more about the inherent distrust and resentment readers have toward such behavior than the characters themselves."Many of my fellow creators are in agreement that one of the things that makes Wonder Woman terrific is that when she walks into a room, her very spirit makes you want to BE BETTER; makes you want to BE GOOD, and DO GOOD good, for yourself and for those around you. Her innate goodness matters because, in play, it inspires others to greater goodness. And if you’ve ever been with someone who does that (and I have), you know how potent a power that truly is."I understand that sentiment completely. It's humbling when someone makes you want to be a better human, and that is REAL, in our world as well. Thanks, Mr. Jiminez!
