I plan to move to Italy. This book is a great book to delve into the culture from an outsider's view. The pictures are lovely, just a nice read.

It's an Okay BOok
How To be Italian is more history and the traditions and customs of Italy than a How-to book. The How-to part is just 5 bullet points at the end of every chapter recapping each chapter. Some suggestions were very good, such as the concept of "Passeggiatta" (taking a stroll around the neighborhood in the evening) and taking pride in one's appearance by dressing appropriately for the occasion. Some How-to's were just absurd: Pack a small suitcase and admire art in a gallery. Wow!! Really!?The reason why I'm giving it 3 stars, like another reviewer pointed out, is the hundreds of Italian words that may or may not include the English translation. There is a glossary in the back, but to make matters worse, it's broken up into categories, making it nearly impossible to find the translations and very disruptive to the flow of reading; really just too much work. I stopped looking thru the glossary about 1/4 of the way in and I really didn't lose anything in the lack of translation. On the plus side, the book itself is attractive and the colored pictures will make you wish you were in Italy right now. The author is also enjoyable to read and I liked reading about the few personal experiences she wrote about. It would have made a more interesting read as her memoir on how an Australian adapted to living in Italy.

Fascinating insight
Nicely presented and full of interesting content. Only issue for me was the number of times the Italian language was not instinctively easy to interpret and whilst there was a dictionary at the back, I began to dread the sight of anything written in italics. Whilst many Italian words are widely known, a lot of those in the book are not, meaning you’re left to guess or repeatedly have to look them up.
