Needle Painting Embroidery: Fresh Ideas for Beginners (Milner Craft Series) Review: Great book - I got this book because I have been learning how to sketch birds, use colored pencils and water color pencil. I have no art training. I thought it would be nice to embroidery some of my sketches and as I searched on the Internet, I discovered this book. Exactly what I was thinking. I embroidered some as a teenager so had some experience with a few stitches. This book is great for a beginner. I have started out with the practice motifs first. So glad I did. Unlike knitting needles, these needles numbers are 1 for largest, 10 for smallest. I also forgot about the fabric grain needs to be correct when you put your hoop on. My first try, was puckered! The book has great instruction and I have been looking at some videos on the Internet regarding the "starting and ending off". I had always used a knot. So glad I know how to do this properly now. I also searched the Internet for storage ideas and found some good ones. (Floss-Away Bags). I also went back to craft store to get a magnifying light. The first small one I bought, OttLite, was too small, missing instructions and no light? Took it back and just got a magnifying light that hangs from my neck. It actually works good. Had 60 % off coupon. So will use this for now but will keep looking around for a better one later. It really speeds things up to see better! I can see this is very time consuming. Hopefully, I will get faster. I like to get results quickly and I can see, doing a bird is going to take lots of work and time, but I am enjoying it. Suppose that is the point anyway. Love this technique. I hope I will eventually get mine to look like the authors. Absolutely beautiful work in this book. May 20, 2016. Sketched, (juvenile marsh wren) did color pencil and then made a guide for needle painting. Need to practice, but I think I learned a bit through this project. 3/5/2017. Completed my second bird pillow and starting a third. Review: Great Instructive book - This is a great book for the beginner and experienced embroiderer. As you read this book from the very beginning, you'll be suprised as to how detailed and concise the information is that is shared in a new and organized fashion. She has wonderful tips and ideas on how to get started and stay organized to keep your project going. I had only worked on enbroidery "kits" and wanted to expand to new and different designs using a "thread-painting" technique. She is very detailed on expanding your horizons to make beautiful designs of your own. Having a system for numbering your thread is crucial to prevent duplication of purchases. The authour walks you thru simple step by step instructions with full color photographs to illustrate the techniques. Her designs are beautiful and simple enough for most anyone to do. This is a winner!

Learn how to do this amazing type of embroidery yourself.
If you want to learn how to do needlepainting embroidery, this is the first book you should read. Trish Burr is simply the best teacher I have come across, and her designs and information on the techniques involved in this beautiful form of embroidery is without peer anywhere in the world, in my humble opinion. The designs are amazing, the information, detailed instructions, photos and diagrams are superb, and I can't wait to learn how to do this for myself.

A must
This book is a must for beginner thread painters. The patterns are clear and concise and the illustrations make being successful very easy.

Photo size
Content seems fine, but the actual pictures of real project are way too small. They need to be larger to see more definition from the individual stitches and color blending.

Fantastic buy
I have been embroidering for years, but I often find that my "pictures" are clumpy or not exactly what I was trying for. This guide has detailed directions and pictures to help me develop smooth stitches. My sister wanted to know if I had purchased an embroidery machine!

Beautifully illustrated, detailed instructions
I’ve followed Trish Burr’s gorgeous needle painted flowers and birds on Pinterest for some time, simply in awe of her talent. I had no idea she had published designs until I stumbled across her blog. So I bought this book to learn how she does it. The lessons build in complexity as the stitcher learns new techniques and confidence. The instructions are very clear and have tons of photos to show you step-by-step how to achieve a blended look with thread. I will definitely be looking to buy additional books from Ms. Burr.
