Its a very, very quiet fan that gently moves the air around. Our fireplace is in our basement and before this little fan all the heat would be trapped in one room and it was like a sauna. The hot air just refused to flow into other rooms. All the metal fins are to keep the top as different of temperature as the bottom. This differential drives the fan.Cons:Should have bought another for my workshop fireplace.

Exactly what we are looking for!i saw that some people gave it 1-star (with picture of it being placed in front of a large open fireplace) because it does not work in front of the fireplace. it is designed to be placed on top of a stove or where there is good heat all around the device (bottom and around).

We bought this for our cottage to help circulate the heat through out the home. Its quiet and works great.
