Safari: A Memoir of a Worldwide Travel Pioneer Paperback – August 9, 2016

The book was absolutely incredible. I knew a brief history of A&K as I've done several trips with the company, but the stories and experiences in this book are truly something else. As a graphic designer and photographer, I appreciate the design of the book as well-- nothing short of high quality! The thick paper stock, the running heads, the colored chapter blocks, the styling of the captions with the rule, and the integration of the photos make the book all the more enjoyable. Some reviews mention how this book is not about a safari. You'd know from the synopsis that this is a memoir-- so much more complex than a simple travel tale. The stories kept me on the edge of my seat, and it was such an easy read... I couldn't put it down! I read the entire book in a day and a half, and I am highly considering re-reading it in a few months time to enjoy it all over again. Even if you haven't traveled with A&K, this book provides a detailed account of how a family founded luxury travel company has been a leading example for the travel industry often going to destinations before it was even popular to travel there. Geoffrey Kent is truly a travel pioneer, and after reading this book I have an even deeper appreciation for Abercrombie & Kent, his philanthropic work, and him as a person. I highly recommend it.

Interesting story of how he was raised in Africa and became a successful head and brainchild of ambercrombie and Kent .

Pretty good storyteller, poor writer. Plus, though he's likeable, Geoffrey Kent suffers from a common affliction: he's a bit too full of himself. I really didn't mind the name-dropping, but I did take umbrage at some of his false outrage: like feeling so much self-pity from being knocked out of the ranks of world class polo by an injury. Sir Geoffrey Kent's memoir is storytelling at its finest. A delight to read, through each adventure he conveys not only his innate love for lands touched, but his incredible sense of blessing at being able to live a life exploring the world, understanding its people, and making a contribution through tourism. It is impossible not to feel his heart smiling as he recounts his journeys - the same feeling that he leaves his A&K guests, and readers, with having been given a glimpse into his world. Truly a 'must read'.

The man has had an interesting life. Almost nothing about his son.It is all about Geoff and who he has met.

What a fascinating life Geoffrey Kent has led! I love this book! The stories are so well written, they read like an exciting adventure novel! I felt like I got to vicariously travel the world from my home while reading this book. Also, I love the pictures! They really add a personal element. I highly recommend this book! It's in my family room book shelf as it is a great conversation piece when I have friends visiting.

Interesting and well written, but if you are looking for a book about what happens on a safari, this isn't the book for you. It is more about how the Abercrombie and Kent Tour Company was built and how the company expanded to the different countries. I was disappointed as I thought it would be about different people the "company" took on safaris and their experiences and tales.

An interesting book about the making of Abercombie & Kent from basic tent holidays in Kenya to world wide luxury holidays.

I had high hopes for this book having travelled extensively to Africa, occassionally at A&K camps. I enjoyed the beginning of the book but it became a superficial, self indulgent book full of name dropping. All in all, just an ad for A&K.

This book was first published in 2015, has 307 pages, 19 chapters, numerous B/W and colour photos and endpaper maps of the World. The foreword is by Jeffrey Katzenberg. The book is dedicated to Author's family and all staff who work at Abercrombie and Kent.JOH KENT of Kings African Rifles and VALERIE WORKE from England married on 12.12.1940 in Nairobi's Anglican Cathedral. GEOFFREY JOHN KENT (Bwana Commander) was born on 14.7. 1942 in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia). Valerie being a nurse, delivered herself. Soon Geoff (GJ) was rushed to Nairobi to have an operation on his pyloric stenosis. When Geoff is attacked as a baby by safari ants, the family bought a 50 acre Kiamweri (running water) farm at South Kinangop (8,000ft) north west of Nairobi under the Aberdare Mountains. In 1947, Geoff's sister ANNE was born. Aged 15, he shoots his first elephant and is determined not to shoot any more, unless with a camera. After selling many elephant tail bracelets, Geoff buys a motorbike and in 1958, he buys a larger motorbike and travels from Nairobi to Cape Town. He sailed back to Mombasa, Kenya, where his parents come to meet him.In 1959, Geoff climbs Mt Kilimanjaro (19,341ft) twice. Then, he flies to England to join the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy. In 1962, during Kenyan independence, the Kents loose their farm to the Africans and move into Rosslyn, Nairobi. In 1965, Geoff returns from the Army and forms "Abercrombie and Kent" Safari Company. He sets the first camp near Lake Baringo and pinches all the staff from Muthiaga Country Club in Nairobi. Geoff was 1st married to Andrea Joss, but in 1970, he marries Jorie Butler from USA, opening A+K branches in Chicago and Florida. He build's "Sun Boats" for cruises on the Nile in 1981. He then expands his business all over the world.In 2010, Geoff marries Otavia Jardim, a Brazilian model.
