Great Book for Aviators and Those Who Appreciate IT
This book is richly written! This woman is almost beyond belief from even her earliest years until the end! Not a fast read but worth every moment. The insight into life and early aviation in Africa is educational and fascinating. Highly recommended! What an amazing woman!

Author's history and background
One of the best memoirs I have ever read. The author chronicles her life as a horse trainer and bush pilot in early 20th century Africa. Her exploits and environment are written with passion and authenticity. Even Ernest Hemingway gave her high praise!

Terrific read!
Although the author doesn't reflect much on her feelings or emotional development, her accounts of her adventures in Africa are amazing. She writes so beautifully that I often underlined phrases and sentences because they were so vivid and poetic. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this memoir.

Remarkable book!
A great book for anyone interested in Africa and the early years of aviation. Beryl Markham is an excellent writer.

Wonderful Book
One of my favorite books! It is about a woman who grew up in East Africa and became a horse trainer, and aviator in a time when women didn't do such things. Beryl Markham certainly lived life to the fullest and this autobiography takes you along for the ride.

Read Ernest Hemingway's Review on the Book's Cover!
Read Hemingway's review, not mine.

This is one of my All-Time Favorite Books. Hemingway's too...
Beryl was abandoned by her mother in Africa at the age of 4 and ran wild on a horse ranch as she grew up. Attacked by a lion...and survived. She was also one of the first female aviators. She hung with Denys Finch Hatten (from Out of Africa) and that whole group. In fact, she was Denys' girlfriend after he dumped Karen Blitzen-Finecke(Meryl Streep) That was a pretty wild and fast group! Beryl is a fabulous writer, and Hemingway said she wrote better than she did. Hemingway actually came upon her book late in both of their lives and promoted it. It made it so she had a comfortable last few years. It's not only a good story, but well-written....always a great combination and hard to find. It's one of my all-time favorite books because it has such an interesting, strong story about the early days of Kenya's settlement and aviation.
