The Official ACT Mathematics Guide

Worth the money!
Working with 11th & 12th grade this year to help them prep for the ACT test. Since I'm the math teacher, it falls to me to get them ready for this portion of the test. I was happy to find this book in really great condition (no writing or marks) at quite a discount from the "new" price. I've been able to start my planning from the comfort of my home (and the campground!) and look forward to familiarizing the students with the type of math questions they can expect on the actual test.

Very Helpful for me so far
I am currently a high school senior looking to retake my ACT and have found that I have a tricky situation when it comes to the mathematics portion. This book so far has done an amazing job with breaking down the sections and helping me build a stamina for answering each math question at a reasonable time. Amazing book and I recommend to also watch YouTube videos - this will enhance your understanding of the book even more.

They charged $2.91 extra for 240 extra problems
I am a private math tutor and author of Ultimate Guide to the Math ACT, Second Edition. The folks at ACT decided to publish four guides, one for each of the subsections of the ACT: english, math, reading and science. This is the second edition of their math guide. The main difference that I can see is that this version now has 400 problems and the first 160 problems are identical to the first edition (more on this later). Of course the price is increased (by $2.91). You could make the argument that this is not a lot to pay to get 240 extra problems, so if you actually want to buy this book the second edition makes more sense. But hold that thought. I suppose the idea behind these subject guides was that students who have a particular weakness, e.g., math, would benefit from a specialized guide. I think the idea was valid but the execution is flawed. All of my students buy the Official ACT Prep Guide (also known as the "red book"). The 2020-2021 edition contains basic information on the sections of the ACT along with six full-length practice tests (that amounts to 360 math problems plus some review examples). Many of the math problems in the official prep guide also appear in this math guide and that is an issue. I like my students to have a handy collection of full length tests and if we were to use the ACT math book first, followed by the red book (official prep guide) then large parts of the math red book tests would be repeats. Another consideration is that the tests in the Official ACT Prep Guide can easily be found online, so my students buy the copy strictly for their convenience of not having to download and print.Someone who is concerned about math might consider buying this book. What you will get is an expanded review of math content (versus the shorter review in the red book) and 400 problems. The expanded review would be helpful and might be adequate for some, but most students will need more material to get up to speed on math content. This official math guide simply cannot compete with the math guides that are independently published, either by tutors like me or by big box publishers like Kaplan and Princeton Review. These guides cost about the same but have more extensive review material and typically have more problems. My guess is that ACT noticed that subject-specific books are selling well and they wanted to get a piece of the action without making much effort. My advice is this: if math is a big concern for you then buy a different book for math review because you most likely will need more lessons, review content and practice than what this official math review contains. Then buy the official ACT guide (the earlier edition is a better value) or download official practice tests from the Internet.

Great explanations!
Make sure that you are looking at the correct answer keys. The answer keys in the BACK of the book are explanations for the practice tests. The problems that are contained in each chapter have answer keys at the end of each chapter. Don’t write bad reviews when you are looking at the WRONG answer key.The book does a great job explaining how to work the problems and why each answer choice is correct.

Hundreds of example problems, explanations in answer key
Got this for my son, who had to do 30 problems/day to earn his video games… :)The answer key has explanations to help correct the ones he missed, which was very valuable.Result: His 2nd math ACT score was 10 points higher b/c of this practice. Highly recommend.

Front page missing
The front of the page was completely torn off; rest of the book is here, but disappointed since this never has happened.

IF I COULD GIVE 0 STARS I WOULD
I was very ready to start studying for the math section to see if I could raise my math score on the ACT. I came here from the ACT website and I don't know why they even linked this for people to use. I am very upset that this book is completely wrong, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. The book has an answer key in the back and it doesn't match with the problems they give (see pictures).

It is useless don't buy it.
It is useless don't buy it. There is nothing important here moreover most of the questions are backdated.
