Works AMAZING for Peking ducks and chickens!!
I just purchased my THIRD dish. I have 2 for my 17 Peking ducks and gifted the 3rd to my son and family for their chickens about a week ago. My coop is NOT heated and this dish keeps the ducks water flowing ALL winter! This will be the 3rd winter for dish #1 and 2nd winter for my 2nd dish. Yes, you MUST slowly remove the plug as others have stated as well as start the removal of the plug with the dish tilted “back”. Remove the plug and SLOWLY lower the dish to a “sitting position” to allow the water to empty into the “drinking area” at a VERY slow rate. It gets down below 0° for days and weeks at a time in the coop with the average temperature in the coop “around” 15 to 20° and have NEVER had a problem with frozen water!! I tried 4 different heated water dishes prior to this one and am VERY happy I found this dish years ago. I’ve lost plugs before but you can go to your local hardware store and buy replacement plugs for about $0.75. I NOW keep spares on hand!!! Once you get used to the method of “leveling” the dish ((from a back tilted position)) after removing the plug, you will find this dish to work VERY well.

The Worst
After reading a good number of these reviews, I was totally convinced THIS was what I needed for my chicken coop. I'd been making three trips a day out to the coop to break the ice, toss, and refill the black rubber bowl (another "crash and burn" recommendation) and was sooooo hoping I'd found the perfect solution. Yes, filling Big Red proved to be tricky but not impossible, especially with the help of another pair of hands. No, filling the container wasn't the issue, it's the backwash thing that's going on. I'm not sure WHY it's doing this, but it leaves the bowl part in the front nasty, and the whole unit smells awful. There is no returning it, and frankly, if I could, I wouldn't for fear that someone else would get this nasty, smelly thing. For now, it's useless, and we're back to our three trips a day routine. Would I recommend this for coops or pets in general? For the price? Ahhhhh, No.

Good product, but cork gets lost immediately
I use this for goats on my farm. It’s really good except the black cork they give you will get lost immediately. You can still use your finger to plug the hole and it works well enough, but lots of my livestock waterers work similarly and provide somewhere on the waterer to properly store the cap/cork when not in use. The cavity on this waterer is not deep enough to accommodate the cork. All in all, good product we’re happy with it. Just go in with this expectation.

Great animal waterer for all types of animals!! Love it!
I have this in my duck house and they love it!! It works wonderful!I have read some reviews saying it just spits out water everywehere, where the rubber stopper goes in. Well that's because they did not follow the directions. This is how to use the rubber stopper properly so it does not spit out water...Put the rubber stopper in the hole all the way when the container is empty, then fill the container. Once filled, (SLOWLY and GENTLY) loosen the plug, do not remove it completely... Hold the plug in place while air and water reach an air/water balance. It must balance water and air pressure first. After pressure is balanced and water is no longer coming from the stopper hole then you can remove the rubber stopper completely. Water will only come out when animal drinks from it to refill the dish they drink from. It's a great product! I have no complants.ALSO.... I tied a spring to my rubber stopper and taped the string to the waterer. You can see the string in the picture. This way I will never loose the rubber stopper and I hang the string up high so it can not be chewed. (You can use duct tape to tape the stopper to the string (OR) do what I did, drill a small hole in the top wide part of the stopper and run a string through the hole. I have never lost the stopper this way.)

Good but could use improvement
I like the waterer, it is a nice concept. However, a few things would make it better; 1. The water bowl could be deeper 2. The front of the container is higher than the filling hole so when you unplug the hole, water shoots out until it vacuums enough to stop it. With the amount of space in the front that is above the filling hole, a LOT of water shoots out before it stops. 3. As others have mentioned, the plug was missing within a day, the small divet in the front of the container isn't big enough to securely hold the plug even though I shoved it in as far as I could.

Hard to find a redeeming attribute .. it does get warm.
It does get warm, that's good. That's about it.After reading another review I thought it would be awesome for our outdoor chicken / duck setup. I've been trying to work with it for months but what a maddening endeavor. It is completely dependent on a tiny rubber stopper that will constantly need to be taken out and put back. If that gets misplaced, the entire thing is useless. One can fashion their own cord to tether the stopper to the unit but why wouldn't this be built in?The larger issues are the bottom ~1.5 gallons is lower than the dispense hole so that water will NEVER come out, ever. With ducks that means all that bottom water will continue getting unimaginably disgusting. Taking the whole thing off to wash out is a real pain. Filling it up is a pain because the hole is pointed backwards towards the wall. One can eventually try to develop the skill in perfectly removing and replacing the stopper without water shooting everywhere but in the mean time ... expect to get wet.Mounting is awkward. The cord sticks out to far in the back. The water bowl is too small. Price is ridiculous. All around a terrible product. For ducks only it can serve purpose of keeping a little unfrozen water available for them to drink in winter. For dogs, please don't even consider this. The Farm Innovators Model P-60 is perfect. For chickens only I ordered this generic thing and it works fantastic - amazon item # B07GZ5MWBZ.
