Nice delivery
This is the second book to Spin The Dawn and overall I am a fan. One thing I do like more is that the genre is a bit mmm intensified, in comparison to the first book. MORE ACTION, MOREHEARTBREAK, AND MORE CLOSURE! My favorite characters are Edan and Keton. [Special mentions: Maia for being the goat][Other special mention to Lady Sarnai bc she a G and didn't deserve all that fr, she was just tryna live her best life]

“I’d find you anywhere, xitara.”Unravel The Dusk is the second half of the duology that starts with Spin The Dawn. I honestly think it was a decent end to the duology, could it have been better? Possibly. I liked it. But i do feel like it was a bit rushed but it was still entertaining. I still enjoyed reading and experiencing Maia’s struggle to not give in to her demon and staying true for her country. Throughout the book she was willing to sacrifice herself to save her family, friends, and country. Including lovely Edan. I was getting annoyed with our lovely Edan because near the end she realized that she had the power to stop the shansen and the demon but instead Edan would tell her that she would lose herself which i completely understand don’t get me wrong. But i do feel like her losing herself in order to save thousands? That’s pretty honorable.“Vengeance is the path to your fall.”Tropes:👿vicious demons❤️🩹sacrifices for love👹deal with a demon🪄dark magic

Perfect Ending
TLDR: A brilliant conclusion to this duology and I couldn’t be happier.I stayed up way too late last night to finish this much-anticipated conclusion to The Blood of the Stars duology and it was completely worth it.Maia is forced to take Lady Sarnai’s place in her wedding to the emperor after Sarnai disappears with her lover. But that is just the beginning of Maia’s troubles. This book is so beautifully written it makes me feel as though I’m reading an honest to goodness mythological story. The magic and the mythos are interesting and lovely.I enjoyed Maia’s relationships with those around her. I was glad to see Ammi come back and it was fascinating to me to see how Sarnai and Maia’s relationship changed with time. And I love the steadfastly loyal Edan. This book made me so incredibly happy from beginning to end and I actually liked it even better than the first one. I’m definitely interested to see what else Lim will write in the future.5/5 stars for me. This duology is making me rethink my top 10 favorites.

A perfect completion of Maia’s story. This was an excellent duology that will catch your attention and keep you reading. Very well crafted story with a beautiful ending.

Not her best or brightest
I love Elizabeth alum books, but had an incredibly difficult time getting through this one. I enjoy suspense, but with a reasonable balance between up and downs. This book pretty much plummets into the dismal abyss straight away and then lives there. The ending saves it, but not by much. My sense of anticipation was already long gone by that point.

Review - Unravel the Dusk
Initial ThoughtsThis is a book that I was dying to read since the second I finished the first book, Spin the Dawn. I loved that book. It had everything I wanted in a retelling and it somehow worked one of my favorite competition shows into the plot. I had really high expectations for Unravel the Dusk. Some Things I LikedMythology and world building. I loved the world Elizabeth Lim created for Spin the Dawn and I couldn’t wait to dive back in. She only enriched the world more with additional myths and stories as well as giving more backstory to the magical scissors in the first book. The romance. It was present, but it wasn’t overbearing. Furthermore, I liked that there was no ridiculous introduction of a love triangle and Maia never questioned her connection to Edan.Moral greyness. I loved that Maia struggled with her inner demon, literally and figuratively. She constantly questioned her motivations and her decisions and I enjoyed seeing her character growth during this story. I also enjoyed this from a role reversal perspective. In Spin the Dawn, Maia was the rock and Edan was the morally grey character. Here, without his magic, Edan had to be stable and help guide Maia back to the good person he knew she was.Series ValueI would love to read more about Maia and Edan’s adventures. Since it seems like we won’t get more of these characters specifically, I’d love to read more about the myths and side characters we met in this series. And, as luck would have it, Elizabeth Lim is currently working on a spin-off series set in this world!Final ThoughtsI loved this book. Did I love it as much as I loved Spin the Dawn? No. Did I still love the characters, world building, and language? Yes. I am always going to be a fan of Elizabeth Lim’s writing style and I really enjoyed this series. The competition element and the descriptions of the dresses in Spin the Dawn set it slightly ahead of Unravel the Dusk for me, but both are excellent reads.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Recommendations for Further ReadingReflection by Elizabeth Lim – if you liked the Mulan retelling aspect as well as the writing style, check out this Mulan story that Elizabeth Lim wrote for the Twisted Tales series. The Magnolia Sword by Sherry Thomas – again, if you liked the idea of a Mulan retelling, try this lesser known version by Sherry Thomas from 2019.Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh – again, if you enjoyed the Mulan aspects of the story and the lush language, try this duology by Renée Ahdieh.
