God Hates Us All: A Novel
S**3
Funny and quick read.
The book is hysterical and a very very fast read. I read the book in almost one sitting (approx. 9hrs) and laughed out loud a few times. I haven't done that since reading "The Pleasure of My Company" by Steve Martin. The story is solid and full of lively, although troubled, characters. You can tell the writer was trying to use the style of Hank Moody and did it pretty well at times. The language is captured very well, and although some characters are just blips on the radar they still show some pop when on the page. A recommend this book to anybody who is looking to read something different from the norm. I myself, a student, have had to read so many books, I hung my head at the thought of reading another one. My Fiance got it for me and when I read it I remembered how fun reading is.

Nice quick read - Series tie-in questionable
Like the majority of other purchasers of this book I'm a huge fan of Californication - Hank Moody especially. As a read, it's a good lazy afternoon session with the Kindle getting lost in the story.Although it won't win a Pulitzer (or a Booker to put it in a local context here) it flows like a modern day Catcher in the Rye. You end up identifying with the narrator and wishing that all ends well for him - wanting him to live the life he wants with the woman he deserves, and cringing when he experiences hurdles on the way. He comes across as an innocent trying to make the most of what's available to him at the time. But as a tie in to the TV series, that took a bit more of a leap. Having probably watched more Californication than would be considered healthy, I have developed - I believe - an appreciation and understanding of the vocabulary and tone of Hank Moody. The sharp and witty dialogue, with a healthy hint of cynicism, does not present itself as readily in this work as experienced in the series. That is unless his writing persona is different to his true one - a form of escapism I suppose - or he developed his current cynical view of life post-'God Hates Us All' (although the title alone would argue otherwise). Also it's hard to imagine this book being adapted to a feel good movie titled 'A Crazy Little Thing Called Love' starring 'Tom & Katie'. The only part of this movie we see is the main stars sitting on a park bench with New York in the background looking all starry eyed - something that doesn't translate into this novel. As a piece of story telling, it is pretty good and quite enjoyable. To picture Hank Moody sitting over a typewriter giving man-birth to this weighty tome - his own words - is a bit more of a stretch.Do I regret reading it - not at all.

Average at best
God Hates Us All is one of those books you hear about on TV and really would love to read but if only it existed. Anyone who watches Californication probably thought about this during the first season (or at least the second season). And now that it's an actual book, I stayed away from it for about a year before I finally picked it up and read it.I wanted to love this book because I love the show. While it should scream Hank Moody, it merely reverberates and imitates. Of course I know Hank Moody is a fictional character, but the book should at least have his attitude within the lines. Not some caricature of it. The characters was all wrong, the storyline outlandish. I didn't expect anything monumental, but I expected something more--something that would pop out and pull me in. I had to force myself to finish this book.I don't know how to review a book without spilling out the spoiler alerts--you should really read this book yourself if you're a fan of the show because it'll tide you over during the hiatus--but the one thing that really bothered me was the main character's relationship with the father. While it's rocky at best, it didn't stay true to what we were build to expect (the show touches on the subject of fathers in Hank's novels). Of course the book is about growing up, moving on and figuring life out no matter what. I just didn't expect a story about a semi-regular guy who has a messed up relationship with a girl who stabbed him one drug-filled night, has a sisterly relationship with another girl, witnesses his parents' downfall, becomes a drug dealer, falls in love with a model who's dating some schmuck in a band, befriends a photographer and gets into a wild adventure one weekend in Korea. The book is littered with subplots that seem to be thrown in for color, but come out bland. I don't know what the ghost writer was thinking when he wrote the story, of if he was being guided down by the producers of the show, but the book just didn't bode well for me. I'm not saying it was bad--like, I said, any fan of the show should read it--I'm just saying that it's not living up to its expectations. Don't even get me started on how it could be adapted into the fictional film A Crazy Thing Called Love. I'm still puzzled by that.

Greatest read I've ever had
If you loved Californication, this book will give you a great story about Hank's life in New York. It is written beautifully, I heard Hanks voice throughout the book, like he himself was narrating the book to me. All tough I didn't have high expectations for this book, they were still met and even had me surprised. Great story, great book, gotta love Hank _____ I bought paperback and quality was really nice. Normal book.

Loved it!
I loved this book. Read through it all at once - couldn't put it down. I've been a fan of the show so that's why I picked it up; while I was reading I kept picturing Hank coming up with the ideas, and I found myself wondering which parts of the book or characters would have been based on his life experience and which he would have made up entirely. That made it an extra fun read.Even without the whole fake show persona surrounding the book it's still a moving story, and it is really, really well told. The characters were each very engaging, and I really felt for the main character - so much so that I felt his emotions very vividly throughout. Tough bittersweet ending, and a lot of the book spoke to me personally. If the show and Hank Moody were real, I would be one of his biggest fans.
