This wide blade tanto has the same blade width as most katana. On top of the blade is a groove/bohi. The beautiful blade is made from 1060 carbon steel. Use of clay on the blade produced a nice subtle and very shallow temper line that curves backwards on the blade tip area. The hamon or hard edge has a hardness of 60 HRC. Top part of the blade is softer and acts as shock absorber for the much harder bottom. Some call this selective hardening. The handle/tsuka and scabbard/saya are made of light colored hardwood with clear lacquer glossy finish. (Also available in satin finish) Both the opening of the handle and scabbard has a black synthetic ring to prevent wood from splitting. A bamboo peg is used to secure the blade tang.
