not as off the beaten path as I had hoped...was already knowledgeable of much more than I anticipated...still, it is fun to see it all in one place...Philadelphia Off the Beaten Path, 3rd (Off the Beaten Path Series)

This book has a lot of pros and cons. If you've never spent time in Philadelphia, this book could be of interest to you. It is well written, in a way that held my interest more than some other guidebooks. It feels more conversational and less like a list of technical information being thrown at you.However, despite it's initial charm, I quickly realized that I wasn't learning anything new! Nearly everything that is written in here is covered in the other guidebooks. As a general Philadelphia guide, it is very nice, but to call it "off the beaten path" is very misleading. There just really isn't much info that wouldn't be found in every other typical city guide. I am planning to move to the area, and was hoping for a little insight. It would be wonderful to find some hidden spots. It appears that all so-called hidden spots have already been discovered by other tour guide writers! If you haven't bought any other books on the city, pick it up. It's a nice read. BUT if you've already invested money in others, why double up on the same info!
