Like A Hot Knife Through Butter!
This drill bit is now one of my favorite tools for drilling custom-sized holes. The piece is sturdy and precise as could be and it accomplished everything I hoped it would. My goal was to drill a hole through a piece of automotive plastic trim to accommodate the installation of an RJ45 jack. I feared it would tear up the plastic and ruin an expensive piece. As it turns out, it seated itself as soon as the bit started to turn and it smoothly cut through the plastic without skipping, wandering, or cracking the surrounding material. I was able to regulate the width of the hole by exerting just the right amount of pressure. I'm very pleased. I highly recommend adding this to your toolbox.

Quality product
The first thing I did was to test the step drill on 1/2" mild steel with a 1/4' pilot hole which saves the end of the step bit from wearing out prematurely from constant use. USE CUTTING FLUID. I used Orapi but there are plenty of other brands available. Oil is NOT a good substitute. Cut holes on a drill press at the lowest speed (mine was 210 rpm). The ratings are higher for the smaller holes but to reach the 1 3/8" hole you'll need to respect the rpm, or risk dulling the blade and ruining the cut. So, by using the low speed for all holes you will be safe. Use a good (6-8 amp) 1/2" hand drill for larger pieces where using a drill press is not possible (quite labor intensive though!). The bucket was made for a vintage Kubota tractor. There were a variety of 1/2", 5/8", 3/4" etc holes. Use a diamond file along the trailing edges to touch up the bit. Of course the titanium will give way but the cutting fluid more than compensates this lost. The drawback is that the 'steps' are not deep enough. If you cut 1/4" you're fine but as soon as you go into something thicker you will have to drill from both sides. Beyond the 1/2" thickness the outer rims of the holes will necessarily start to feel the grinding away from the next step up -with the 1 3/8" the exception.Overall, buy quality from a reputable dealer. Highly recommend the product and seller.
