Improve Your Bass Skills
I own all 4 volumes of the Jamiroquai books. I will talk about the series in general, then specifics about this particular volume.General Comments - Stuart Clayton did a fantastic job putting these books together. Many thanks to him for publishing these for us all to learn from. The volumes coincide chronologically with Jamiroquai’s releases with song selections from 2 albums at a time. The song selections are great and I am definitely not left feeling like something is missing.Stuart includes facts about each song, discusses some theory and provides performance tips. This is an added bonus you do not get in other song books and is a nice addition indeed. The book itself is easy to read, sturdy and the cover has some kind of coating that gives it a quality feel. Tabs are spot on. Some negligible errors in references made to certain bars but you can still easily find which ones he has mentioned based on the description.I do not have a 5 string bass, nor do I plan on buying one, each of these volumes have at least 1 song tabbed out for 5 strings, some more than others. Don’t let this deter you from purchasing these books. You can still play these songs on a 4 string. This will require some work on your part however, it is rewarding. Just tab them up an octave, or find the same tone on your E or A string. If you are playing with the recording, you won’t hear much of a difference. If you are playing the song in a band, your audience probably won’t notice either.About me-I have been playing guitar for approximately 35 years. I have been playing bass for about 20 years. I typically listen to rock, but digging more into bass recently initially through Motown, R&B and Funk, has led me to Jamiroquai.Volume 4 - Paul Turner is the bass player throughout this book. This volume is my favorite! Songs are so good, Paul’s lines are tasteful, purposeful and challenging (some more than others). Paul’s style reminds me of Motown, James Jamerson type of lines. Song highlights “White Knuckle Ride”, “Smoke and Mirrors”, “Two Completely Different Things", “Something About You” and “Summer Girl” will test your ability to jump from popping to fingering. There are seven 5-stringers in here, Mostly all off of the “Automation” album. All but “Superfresh” are easily moved to 4-string.I have no doubt that for most of you, you will improve your playing working your way through these songs and have fun as you are able to replicate these lines and ultimately fold some of it into your style no matter what style you are into.
