I can't get the softbox to tilt very far without changing the shape of it. Any tips on how to be able to tilt it a full 45 degrees?

When you attach the soft box to the strobe, is the strobe that you need to tilt, not the the soft box, if that's what you are trying to do... Maybe I'm not understanding your intent.
