Q: Does the toxic burning smell when you turn it on eventually go away?

Did you do an initial burn off? After I did that the only smell I have is just related to the heat.

Q: is this an auto open machine?

No you have to use some force to close and open that is how you get a firm pressure to apply your "design".

Q: Can anyone tell me where this machine was made? china, us ect? is the heat platen actually 16" x 24" or slightly smaller?

To be Honest with you, the Machine is the right size , but the one I received is defective and I am waiting for a refund.

I have put it to 350-400 degrees an for most cotton shirts you need not go higher cuz the texture on the shirt will be different. Yes it is adjustable in a way you could make the pressure more or less by turning the adjustable knob which is very tight a little struggle but you'll get it to loose. .
