DIRECT SOW or SOW INDOORS; In late fall thru very early spring, preferably in a protected cold frame if sown outdoors, remove weeds and work rich organic medium into the top 6 - 8 inches of soil ensuring good drainage; then level and smooth. Broadcast seeds evenly pressing onto soil and resist covering seeds. Astilbe seeds need light to germinate. Firm the soil lightly and keep it evenly moist but not excessively wet. Protect the area from birds, wildlife and seed wash away if planted outdoors. If planted in late spring or indoors, stratification may be required to break dormancy for germination. 30 to 45 days of refrigeration may be required. Mother Nature does this naturally as prior cold periods aid germination when temperatures warm in the spring. Seeds are slow to germinate and may take 28 - 40 days. 10 - 12 seedlings will make a good sized plant. Thin plants to 12 inches apart after second set of leaves.
