The Suicide Squad [DVD] [2021]

Num num!
A new movie based on the DC comics title 'Suicide Squad'. Which is a superhero version of the Dirty Dozen. Villains are sent on dangerous missions and get time off their sentences. If they survive. This is a soft reboot, as it were, of the previous Suicide Squad film. It makes no reference to the events of that, and just uses four of the characters from it. So you can get into this without needing to see that. The Squad here are on a mission to the Island of Corto Maltese. A place in the grip of revolution. Soldiers aren't the only danger awaiting them. Dark secrets of a research complex remain to be discovered as well....This contains violence, strong language, adult moments and is pretty graphic with it, so it's a fifteen certificate and thus not for the kids.It does manage to work. And work perfectly. Those who didn't like the previous film, come back! The director here gets full latitude to do what they want, which didn't quite happen last time. And the results are a treat. It comes from the writer director of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Whilst it manages good and occasionally bizarre character humour in the same way, it adopts a very different tone. War movie mixed with grindhouse. A slightly non linear structure also works. All of the characters come straight from the pages of various dc titles down the years. Even some of the more electic ones. But it works by treating the bizarre as just part of this world and everyone plays it just right. It also makes you care for these characters. Entirely CGI creation King Shark is superbly voiced and written, so you can't help but love him in particular. As a result, it's a thoroughly entertaining and memorable ride. Not being part of any franchise telling one big story over many movies gives it latitude. And if you know your dc comics, there's plenty to notice and delight about. Some scenes are in Spanish, with subtitles that cannot be turned off. Which is fine by me but some are not keen on the latter, so I just thought I'd mention it.A hugely entertaining movie experience, and a great fun ride. Well worth five stars.Do keep watching to the very end of the credits as well. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options: Languages: English, Castilian Spanish, Italian.Subtitles: English, Castilian Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Swedish. The disc goes straight into the main menu when loaded with no trailers or ads. There is one extra: The way of the Gunn. Six mins long, and one of those how amazing the director is and how they were to work for features. But this is pretty good, and worth a watch.

Fun all around
After the first attempt, this was the best kind of "apology" movie that could be made with this characters, Fun, action packed, self referential and acutely aware of what it's doing. A bit like Deadpool, but more on the side of its characters. This is really a fun adventure, with top notch performances and set pieces, that is definitely the correct way to treat this franchise. Image and sound are great, colors are vibrant in the 4K disc, and extras are plentiful. James Gunn did well by this franchise.

Deflated with this one.
I really enjoy the first one (directors cut) but this is a pale follow up. Gunn, who I enjoy as a director, I feel has over indulged himself and its fallen short. In essence it came over to me as a "lets cram as many names into the film" and weave an insipid story line around them. The false start at the beginning had the promise of a good story but was cut short and I'm sure Mr Gunn thought it was a very funny plot twist but TBH I just found it juvenile esp as most of the guys at the start had more charisma than what followed.Peter Capaldi's character was reminiscent of the love child of 70's Davros and Hilda Ogden, just far less intimidating. The big baddie at the end was a cross between the Stay Puft man from Ghost Busters and a telly tubby. Waller turns into a psychopath who burns people for slighting her wardrobe, explained in the deleted scenes on disc. Robbie and Elba are the films only real good acting/character points but the sound track is good.Contrast that with the extras on the disk which were rather enjoyable and worth the extra star. The deleted scenes would have enriched the movie and explained a few things. The very funny out-takes show a good dynamic between the stars which sadly did not make it over to the final cut, I can only assume the director did not want that. 80 or so engaging minutes which were far better than the actual film.I feel that Mr Gunn has tried to make a R rated movie and a kids movie and a comedy but failed on all counts. The expendables with super villains; just not half as good.

A FUN-PACKED AND BIZARRE MOVIE EXPERIENCE
The second in this madcap adventure series telling of how suicide squads largely drawn from prison inmates and injected with a destruct device which will be triggered if they fail to carry out their mission.Starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Robert DuBois / Bloodsport:and John Cena Christopher Smith / Peacemaker are within two teams sent to Corto Maltese to overthrow an anti-American regime. We'll see much humour, a mistaken assault where resistance fighters are killed, a talking shark and a series of bizarre incidents leading to a battle for survival against a giant Star-Fish.Well, the first in the series was way over the top, think this is way more so....but, great fun.Again, for me Margot Robbie steals the show.Good 4k presentation

Don't believe the hype. Not as good as the original one.
I really do not know why some people are lauding this Suicide Squad version over the original one. The first version has a better plot and is not so gratuitously violent. My favourite character, Harley Quinn, is not so good in this latest episode. Yes, it's a good comic book film but lacks the originality of the previous incarnation. It's ok but I was disappointed with it and I know so are many others. I would wait for it to be shown on Sky or Netflix etc to decide whether you want to own it.

Worst than the first, don’t waste your money.
I’ve give up on buying movies thinking that they’d be pretty good because on big movie studios with all there money and resources. This film is really poor with bad acting, script, characters, bad everything really and the swearing, don’t mind swearing in movies but not to this scale, it’s like swearing when there’s no need. It Shows a bad film and script writing when they have to swear every other word. Shock factor no thanks.Let’s hope there’s no sequel. Don’t waste your money like this guy writing the review.
