Tor Books Dune: The Lady of Caladan

A good read for Dune fans
I have read this entire trilogy and as you are probably aware these books cover the period immediately leading up to Frank Herbert’s Dune.I liked how this series filled in some of the missing pieces of why things were happening in the original Dune novel (like why the Harkonnens were leaving Arrakis).I found this book the most captivating read of the three.Overall, I definitely enjoyed the three and would highly recommend to a fan. I have all of the novels in hardcover so I would not have missed the opportunity to read these.

Five Star Story, Three Star Book…
You know already, the story is brilliant. My issues with the publication are:- It looks very much like a ‘Print on Demand’ book from the warehouse press. The issue with this is: it looks somehow… less authentic, professional & is less aesthetically pleasing.Does this matter? It does to a collector like myself. Somehow, I thought I’d ordered the ‘TOR’ version. If you’re a collector, or want the more ‘pleasing to the eye and touch’ nicer version of this, spend the extra, and order the version published by ‘TOR’ publishing.- The paper used with this version attracts dust and dirt like a piece of adhesive tape. This necessitates wiping and rubbing the paper ends and sides carefully with folded kitchen roll to get rid of it.- It’s also very clumsy and bulky to hold with the weight of paper used. Typically, the weight of paper used by ‘TOR’ is lighter and nicer.First World Problems - I know. It’s not as important as the many, many issues facing humanity at present. However, as an avid collector and aesthete, I thought I’d let you good folks know about it.

Second Title of the Trilogy, First Edition Hardcover
This is the new trilogy set just before Dune, and is worth owning and reading, whether you are a fan of Brian Herbert or Kevin J Anderson. The third part is due later in 2022. I have some of the First Editions of the Herbert's first books in the Dune series, and while I read all the other titles produced by the duo, I didn't enjoy them as much as how Frank had written his books. Brian Herbert's narrative style is much more modern, faster paced, and he doesn't fill it with the nuances as Frank does, perhaps because he isn't quite the 'creator' of the canon. I won't critique the second book for its plot and story arc - having read the library's eBook version via Libby - but chose to own this hardcover simply because of its being First Edition to complete my library. If you haven't an interest in collecting books or the Dune series, my review isn't going to help you. But if you have the first series of Frank's books, this Trilogy is worth adding, even if you've skipped the other titles produced by the duo Brian and Kevin.
