I was quite impressed with how easy this book makes it to learn. Their illustrations include light pictures in the background of the chinese symbols to help make learning easier. I just glanced over it quickly as this was for my son, and now I know what numbers look like and other words mean. Its a pretty clever way to learn !! Im impressed.

Soooo my 6 year old son has taken an interest in the language and wanted to explore his options to teach himself Mandarin! This book has been a wonderful addition to our household book collection as he gravitated to it daily! He carries it everywhere we go! Love the pictures, explanations and ease at which he can go from word to word acquiring exactly what he was looking for in this book!

A bit complicated for someone at my beginner level, but full of interesting information on each character. I still like it. Just may take me a while to comprehend everything.

Good concept plus excellent mp3 recordings. Chinese fonts of derived words are too small.The background tone of the drawings are "too dark" causing interference while reading the Chinese symbols.

Beautifully-designed, fun book to help supplement beginning and intermediate students of Chinese. Should be useful for my studies!

Can't say I took to this. I think that the best way (for me at least) to learn Chinese characters is to see them used in sentences over and over. This is how I prefer to learn a new language; constant use until it sticks.

Brilliant book but prefer to use some of my own mnemonics which come easier. Not all of the example mnemonics are fully thought out enough to be complete enough in memory. But on the whole this is a very good book.

Lacks a pinyin index and a radical index and is organized so it's very difficult to find characters because it has so many sections. Has an English-Chinese index which is useless for readers. Since this is a book about characters, and since one character has several English meanings, the English-Chinese index is frustrating. Does have a pronunciation CD, but you can get that online for free. i don't know what the publisher was thinking. You almost need to buy several books to make one useful book. It's also biased toward simplified characters. Probably the best mnemonic system is Remembering Traditional Hanzi by Heisig and Richardson or, for the first common 300 characters, Speak and Read Chinese by Herzberg.
