Great food and encouragement
I wish we could be homesteaders but being military and moving every otther year, sometimes every year, well it isn’t the cards right now, but it’s a retirement dream. We love their show and I saw some reviews about how if you didn’t like the show you wouldn’t like the cookbook. I sat false on that one. Eve writes this understanding that the average reader isn’t homesteading next door in Alaska. She takes the time in most of the recipes to put notes about substitutes if you can’t find a certain ingredient and explaining why certain ingredients are used whether it be their nutrition profile or what not. They do include wonderful little stories about their homesteading adventure which are a fun bonus, but the book itself just has some many delicious wholesome real food recipes. You don’t have to be a homesteader growing your own food - I want a garden so badly and at some duty stations we have been able to have small ones. Right now it isn’t realistic because we moved middle of the summer and leave early summer next year. But they encourage the reader to be a homesteader in whatever capacity you can or to just be more conscious of where your food is coming from and express a little of why they feel that’s important. Eve encouraged me to try my hand at capturing and starting my own sourdough! I can’t say my first try was faultless but my 4 year old and I made her sourdough waffles with our starter (that she helped with daily and was excited about) and she gobble them up!! My daughter has seen some of their show, she does everything with me. Kids are so much more observant that we realize sometimes. I didn’t realize how much she was becoming aware of my desire to know where our food was coming from until she asked me if I captured that chicken I was prepping for dinner one night 😂 This book is a great challenge to me to keep up with my quest to keep more real food in my house, do what I can in our current circumstances to grow what I can and purchase more food that I know where it came from and meat that is humanly raised, to include my children in as much of it as possible so that they understand the importance. Thank you Eve and Eivin for sharing a little of your homestead with us!

Attractive book from a delightful couple, few truly new recipes for a proficient homestead cook
I enjoyed leafing through this book, as only a cookbook addict can, and the anecdotes and attractive pictures dispersed throughout the book unquestionably add charm, especially to us, who appreciate the reality show "Alaska The Last Frontier" on Discovery. However, this book did not give me that much new material, recipe-wise, to work with. I noted the Cranberry BBQ sauce in my recipe keeper and made almost half a gallon for our BBQ season, and decided to try Craig's Tahini vinaigrette (which I have yet to do), but other than those, similarly simple and delicious recipes already feature in the repertoire of those of us who were raised by old timey "homesteaders".I would still recommend this book. I preordered it, perused it for a few months, taking pleasure in the plain, but attractive writing of the authors, and then eventually passed it on to the next person who would enjoy it just as much as I did.

Amazed with first recipe and personal stories! 🥰
I love Watching Alaska Frontier! This year was able to buy our 10 acre farm and are ready to start living a more holistic life style! The first recipe I made in this book was from the berries out of our garden last year. Blueberries, huckleberries, raspberries, black currents, and an Asian pear! This pie was a crowd favorite and is now a new holiday must have, not to mention this easy and fast crust! 🙌🏻 Wonderful stories printed throughout. I am in love with this book! Thank you

Amazing stories and awesome recipes with pictures using fresh ingredients! A must have for a fan and fellow sustainable cook!
Amazing stories and awesome recipes with fresh ingredients! Only halfway through and I am so glad I purchased this!Quick update...I finished reading through and must mention that the pictures are excellent! I only wish they had captions on the herbs so I know which is which as we don't have things like this in Hawaii, but I love learning about it. I have enjoyed the stories and anecdotes immensely, thank you for the intimate peek into your lifestyle, I am inspired!I love that Eve wrote a specific brand of pectin and why the uses it, this is so helpful! Love the detailed instructions, very easy to follow recipes for someone that loves cooking. I also appreciate the different uses in the tea section, while the disclaimer does state the general FDA stuff, this mama really appreciates the info! I hope they keep writing and put out more of these with canning recipes!

Beautiful and Functional. Win-Win.
What a wonderful cookbook to add to my collection! I have already read it cover to cover. Great writing by both Eivin and Eve- I could totally hear their distinct voices in what I was reading, and found myself chuckling often as I read. The pictures of the family are so charming- finding Findley right at the beginning completely set the tone for the book and it was so heartwarming to see. I love the tone of the homesteading advice- completely informative and "this is how we do it" without being preachy or proclaiming that their way is the only way. Eve suggests right at the beginning that one should feel free to play with the recipes for available ingredients, and then carries that throughout the book. I've already made the Blueberry Muffins and the Chicken and Barley Soup, and both are winners. This book will be used often- as a recipe book and as inspiration.

I was so excited to see this book for sale on amazon. I love the Kilchers and have followed their lives since their programme came on discovery :-) my book arrived yesterday and it's wonderful ... amazing recipes that I'll be able to cook using my own garden produce. There's some lovely family stories about their homestead lives and old family pics too. This is a great book. I'm very excited about it ☺️
