Awesome books.
Intense storyline. I read this book in 3 days at my timeshare in Tennessee. I couldn't put it down. I read it instead of doing the tourist thing in Gatlinburg and Pidgeon Forge. Can't wait to buy the rest of the series.

A difficult to read, but the author address a lot of society issues.
This book is drug multi'- plot legal/murder/drug drug/ family drama that can be very legal in dealing with the dark side of poverty verses moneyed special interest influenced by greed and power in Mission area on San Franciso.

โWeโre lawyers. We sell bullsh*t. Itโs our job.โ
Author Sheldon Siegel has "a new challenge for defense attorney Mike Daley--ex-priest, ex-husband, ex-public defender--and itโs a high-profile zinger: a case he doesnโt think he can win for a client he canโt stand."San Francisco District Attorney Prentice Marshall Gates III is front-runner for California Attorney General. Mike Daley is the last person who would expect a call from Gates, so he is surprised to hear from him. He is even more surprised to learn that Gates has been arrested. Gates says he woke up in his hotel room next to the body of a dead young male prostitute โ he has no idea who he was or how he got there. Prosecutors in his own office are already gathering evidence to proceed with a death-penalty case...Mike, his law partner, ex-wife Rosie Fernandez and the new third attorney in their law practice, (Mike's ex-girlfriend) Carolyn OโMalley take the case. The more they dig into the evidence, the more it seems that Gates is lying (and, if his lips are moving, you KNOW Gates is lying). As the case progresses, he NEVER admits he is lying until AFTER he is "caught out" by evidence that comes to light. However, even if he is lying, it is his attorneys' job to defend him to the best of their ability (even for the most heinous of all crimes โ murder)...Carolyn does not get mentioned a lot in this book, but I assume we will see more of her as the series progresses. An attorney working in a partnership with his ex-wife and his ex-girlfriend should be interesting (therapy, anyone?)...This story takes place from the rich neighbourhoods of San Francisco to the dangerous and often deadly "underworld" of the Mission District โ with it's prostitutes and drug pushers...Mr. Siegel is a masterful storyteller โ I like that most of the book took place in the courtroom โ while even the major characters are gathering evidence as the trial takes place. The plot is well thought out, the characters are believable and the topic addressed is interesting. The story holds your interest, details are vivid. While you read, you can visualise the story taking place in your head, much like a movie (if your imagination is anything like mine). It "feels" more real to me if I have all the necessary details so I can follow story from beginning to end...There are plenty of twists and turns to satisfy even the pickiest reader. The action switches between low-octane to adrenaline-fuelled with ease. The suspense will keep you turning the pages โ you simply must know what happens next...I HIGHLY recommend author Sheldon Siegel and this series (A Mike Daley/Rosie Fernandez Novel series). Mr. Siegel has gained another fan โ as long as he writes, I will read.

A Very Entertaining Legal Mystery
I've now read the first two books in this series and thoroughly enjoy the author's writing style. I generally don't enjoy reading books written in first person, but Mr. Siegel has a nice way of doing it. I love the inner dialog comments that are added. They are a little sarcastic and always expressing what the reader is thinking too. And they often add witty relief to what could otherwise be a little dry. That's another thing -- often legal novels can be dry, but Mr. Siegel's style keeps the plot moving along nicely. And doesn't become bogged down in legalese. Mike is a unique character, what with his various career choices. His relationship with his daughter and ex-wife add a lot of interest and heart to the plot. While Mike's relationship with Rosie might be unconventional, it proves how much they really love each other -- they've found a way to be there for each other even though being married doesn't work for them. I hope in future books he finds a better balance with Grace that he is struggling to find in book 2. It was also nice to see characters in book 1 returning in book 2. I hope this continues in future books. I look forward to reading about them again. While it is seldom that I see big cases moving as quickly to trial as portrayed, it is interesting to see why a defendant might want that and how challenging that makes it for the defense attorney. Plus it moves the plot along nicely. The central legal case seems bound for a guilty verdict -- there is just so much incriminating evidence. But there are plenty of other characters that add to the plot complexity, lead to reasonable doubt, and ultimately to other conclusions. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. And that equals entertainment for the reader!I look forward to reading other D&F books and hope Mr. Siegel continues writing them.

Fast Read with Interesting Ending
Loved the first book. Was truly affected by twist ending. The problem is the beginning and the trial description. Sometimes, itโs word for word from the first. A new journey is needed for the plot. Walking through expert witness testimony is repetitive and unnecessary for previous readers. Author is a good, interesting writer. Great pace. Just needs a new thread for his tale.

Good, but it has the faults of a sequel
I enjoyed this one a bit less than Special Circumstances (bk 1). It is a bit similar in that it all goes back to a late night meeting of high powered but unpleasant people and, yet again, lawyers are entwined in the crime and not just the court case. It strains belief that the DA should be on trial without standing down, or at least taking leave, from his post and giving up his candidacy for attorney general. It strains belief that the DA should have arranged what he did for the early hours directly after the high powered meeting, and in the same couple of rooms, while some of the high-powered people were still swanning around the place. It also strains belief that Mike Delaney, who must by now be a nationwide figure of considerable standing, still gets so involved in the nitty gritty aspects of detection. What is more, the book gets bogged down and stodgy in the middle and it could/should have been quite a bit shorter.

Riveting
I really enjoy the witty asides and cut-and-thrust of the court procedure. This story presents some very sleazy and distasteful activities of a public figure and it seems that Mike will surely fail to save his client from the death penalty. The hard work and conscientiousness of a good lawyer is demonstrated here, as well as the fortuitous outcome of unexpected events. I found it impossible to put down until the very end.

Another winner
This is my second novel by Siegel, and Iโm just as impressed as I was with the first. Intelligent story, believable characters, and lots of interesting twists and turns. Iโm looking forward to reading number 3.

Another page turner!
I love this guys writing, so in depth and yet thoroughly entertaining. Every character is fully outlined and brought to life. I find myself in the casting seat often considering who would best play the roll in a movie. I sort of figured out the twist in this story but still was not disappointed. So well done Sheldon, I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.Ron

Legal Eagle
Quite entertaining with main characters developing from previous book. Only critism would be there are too many periferal character/names to keep track of, but this could be just me.
