Trejo takes us on his journey of juvenile detention, jail, his turbulent troubling marriages and his three beautiful children. Trejo is a devoted father who successfully turns his life around after spending his last two prison terms in two of the most dangerous prisons where he fully expected to die. Trejo overcomes his addictions and gives up drinking and he then becomes a counsellor for drug and alcohol addiction and feeds the homeless people. Trejo leans not to be the tough guy all the time and to start listening to the women in his life. Trejo tells how he got into acting, opened a string of restaurants, and becomes the best father he can be especially when he is faced with his teenage sons and daughter going down the same road he did at the same age getting into drugs and alcohol ignoring his advises and knowing as a parent no matter how bad the outcome he can be their but also knowing this is their decision to make alone. After reading this book which is professionally written I would call Trejo a very honest man who does not pretend to be anything other than who he is. He is an honest talker, and the book at times is heartbreaking as well as uplifting. I admire Trejo for getting clean of the drugs and alcohol and telling how his infidelity in relationships ended as his partners had enough and left but owning up and being honest about his life and the many mistakes, he has made but being responsible for his actions. This book is told with honesty, and humour and a beautiful read. Review: One of the best books that I have read in a long time. - This book is inspiring for people of differnet backgrounds that are currently going thru life struggles. He shows his ups and downs about his life. He shares his prision life experiances, struggle with drug use, and recovery from drugs. I like the fact that he went and opened Drug treatment facility to save other peoples lives. Hopefully he saved many peoples lifes from future hardships. Would recommend this book to a wide range of people.

Wow! SO glad I read this book! Inspirational, funny, just plain awesome!
This book was recommended to me and I waited since I had never seen a single movie of Danny Trejo's. I expected some ego-driven, tough guy story - boy was I wrong! This book was truly outstanding! It was inspirational, funny, and touching. His appreciation for everything in life is heart warming. Unlike so many others, he doesn't try to make himself perfect or more than what he is. So insightful about a world I knew little about. A true story of redemption - and a wonderful read! God Bless Danny Trejo!

Solid Book
Danny has a likability that resonates well with his audience and the trait is very visible in his autobiography. I picked it up on a whim, but it turned out to be an enjoyable read. There is so much more to Danny Trejo than meets the eye.

Powerful storytelling
With his life in the balance and seemingly holding no weight, a young and incarcerated Danny Trejo came to this realization: “Faith shoves fear out of the room. There’s no room for fear if you fill your soul with faith. Immediately, a calm came over me. All this terrible weight I didn’t even know I had been carrying left me. I felt exhausted, but in a good way. I relaxed and decided to let God carry the weight.” Trejo must re-learn and re-gain trust in this realization throughout his life and that is the tension wrapped around this compelling memoir. It would be easy to think the actor whose stony visage is recognizable to millions from his film and television work, got clean, got lucky, and cruised to a Hollywood happy ending. But having faith doesn’t mean having it easy. The guy is no saint, and his good deeds often equaled his poor decisions. His honesty in presenting his story, with a powerful assist from his talented co-writer, the actor Donal Logue, makes the reader stick with Trejo through failed marriages, health challenges, and the nightmares of a father with drug-addicted children. Somehow hope keeps Trejo grounded in the present moment, helps him keep putting one foot in front of the other, helps him believe all shall be well when it least seems like it. A riveting read.

A Life One Hundred Percent Lived
In "Trejo" Author Danny Trejo gives a full, unvarnished look at his life, both his successes and his failures. It's a powerful story of redemption, an examination of family, of consequences, of the importance of attitude in determining quality of life. What struck me most about Danny Trejo was that whatever he did, he committed himself fully (with the possible exception of being a husband...in that part of his life, he seemed fully committed to being accountable only to himself), taking the rewards and consequences of his choices as they came. A story like his cannot come without cost, and Mr. Trejo has paid a stiff price for the wild ride through gang life, prison, and Hollywood, bearing a considerable amount of suffering and soul-searching along the way. His story is at once heartbreaking, funny, warm, horrifying, and ultimately uplifting. Through he has achieved a level of fame few can match, he remains humble and tied to his Los Angeles roots. Although much of his book is a lesson in what not to do, Danny Trejo's greatest lesson is that faith-based service can be a powerful, transformative force, and that even in the darkest of places, one can still find hope. Trejo is a emotional roller coaster, and well worth the read. I highly recommend it.

I have loved Danny Trejo for years now. He has the most incredible face. I could just look at him for hours if that wasn’t a really creepy thing to admit/suggest. I swear, I’m safe to be around people. For the most part. For the uninitiated (where have you been?), Danny Trejo is the Mexican-American actor with the ponytail, awesome moustache and the massive chest tattoo. He’s also the most killed actor in Hollywood history, and he has an incredible life story. Having first used heroin at the age of twelve, let’s all take a moment for that, Danny Trejo spent much of his adolescence and early adulthood in prison. Having been instructed, from an early age, in the ways of crime and imprisonment by his beloved uncle Gilbert, Mr Trejo survived incarceration but, after one fateful event, he made a promise to God and to himself that he would get out and stay sober. Out of prison, tee-total and working with addicts in treatment centres across the state, Danny Trejo fell into background acting as a means of making a few extra dollars. But with his extraordinary features and background, it wasn’t long before he came to the fore - playing the tough guy, criminal, general baddie, on screens big and small across the world. As he states in his book, it wasn’t just the extra money that brought him to acting. It was the desire to reach out to those suffering from addiction, and to highlight the treatment programmes he was involved with. What I really liked about this autobiography was that the author doesn’t spin history to suit himself. I found this fascinating. Most of us are the heroes of our own stories and tell our tales from our own flawed perspective, where everything that happens is tragic or golden; the bad times are other peoples’ fault, the good times were us and us alone. Danny Trejo doesn’t do that. He admits to his mistakes, states outright that some of the things he says might sound a bit iffy, owns his troubles and, okay, he swears a good amount, but he also talks about God a lot so it balances. An exceptional life story from a fascinating man.
