Vocabulary from Classical Roots - A Paperback – January 1, 1998

I know this book is meant for older kids but, it's so well laid out and easy to understand that my six year old son just completed book 4 and loved it. Now every time he hears a root word, suffix or prefix that he recognized he gets so excited. The lessons are so short and concise that we discuss one lesson at each dinner time. Then he takes the unit review quiz at the end of the week and always aces it not because he is super smart but because the lessons focus on understanding not memorization. If you're interested in improving vocabulary skills, The Classical Roots books are great for any age. I bought books 4-6 and A-E and plan to work with my sons through the whole series.

I'm using this book as a tutor, helping students with more limited vocabulary. This book is exactly what I was looking for, for teaching vocabulary skills.The current student is in 9th grade, and needs to start working on vocabulary now to be ready for SATs, as well as to understand her high school work. This book is approachable for her, has the right size chunks in each lesson, and has practice exercises so she can practice the skills. I will add a requirement to write a sentence with each word, and give me a few more sentences verbally -- I didn't see that in the book.I like that it's a series, also. We'll be working through the series during the summer and coming year(s).

My 6th grader loved this--very interested in the roots of words and always has been. If your kids are not as linguistically oriented I could see this being a bit advanced for that age. But for younger kids like mine looking for a challenge, or older kids and adults looking to build their vocabulary and knowledge of etymology, this is an excellent book. Beware it does not include an answer key; from what I could find online, it is sold separately, but for us half the fun is looking up the things we did not know.

Superior approach to vocabulary for everyone, from middle schoolers peering through the hazy future to the SATs to adults bemused by etymology. Highly recommend.

I've taught English for over 25 years, and this is the best source for classical vocabulary that I have ever found. I am impressed by the different levels that are in the series. It helps students to go beyond the regular vocabulary lesson to really understand what our words mean and where they came from.

I really like the concept of Vocabulary from Classical Roots. The student does not learn individual, non-related vocabulary words, but groups of words associated with a latin root. Once the roots are learned then the student can identify challenging words through the root. The program also takes the words and gives practice in the use of the word - whether it is a noun, adj., verb, etc.I didn't give it a full five stars, because some will think it is dry. There are no cute drawings and comics here, just a no-nonsense vocab program. There is a review built in, but it comes after several lessons. It would be great if there was some type of review to continuously study the roots. I need to prepare my own concentration game or something for that.

BEST vocab book I have ever seen. I started my 13yr old on it, and have already ordered 'B'. Very fun to learn...
