Q: Why is the batteries not rechargeable?

Rechargeable batteries loose their charge over time and typically within 30 - 60 days. Decent NiMH AAA batteries cost more than standard Alkaline batteries which don't self-discharge. The problem with AAA alkaline batteries is that they tend to leak and would destroy these lights especially if they are kept in a hot car. Best solution is to buy Energizer AAA Lithium Batteries, Ultimate Lithium Triple A Battery (12 Count) with a 20 year shelf life, $14.98 @ amazon. (three packages $45.00).

Q: Why aaa battery (instead of aa, w/much greater capacity)? almost the same size & cost. especially in equipment which may remain idle for years

You probably want an answer from a manufacturer, but as a purchaser of these I will answer. 3 AAA batteries are significantly smaller than 3 AA batteries. These disks are a lot larger than I expected, and with 3 AA batteries they would have to be a lot larger. If you use lithium batteries, they'll have adequate power and will sit idle a long time with no issues. I'm very pleased with how these work and hope I dont need to use them.

Q: Lights just arrived. I've removed both screws from 2 lights and cannot get either open to install batteries. What is the trick to this?

There is a small indent that a small screwdriver can fit in on the seam. It does take a fair amount of force to open. Only flaw we've found so far in using this product.

Q: How do you change the batteries?

You simply remove the screws from the cover and pull it off with the handle.
