High quality sound recording with the right phone.
As typically happens with any of my microphone or audio setups, I initially suffered about 40 minutes of frustration while tracking down dreaded line noise and canceling it out. The device plugged in quick like a champ and worked right out of the box, but I got lots of ugly line noise. My setup includes a mixing board to a computer sound card.Step 1: After muting unused audio sources and bypassing the mixer, most of the hiss stopped.Step 2: I swapped to a different phone. The `Loud' setting on my second phone amplified loud enough for this gadget to do its job. The second phone's microphone performed more clearly, robustly, and with significantly less perceivable line noise. I learned not to blame the LRX-35 for a bad phone's shortcomings. 90% of the successful sound quality comes from a higher loudness setting. At the normal handset volume setting, the LRX-35 does not perform to my satisfaction. The included sticky mount feels rock solid and permanently affixed. Please note this device will not work on a cordless phone, cellular phone, or while using speakerphone. Choose a more versatile call recorder for those needs, but stick to the LRX-35 for better sound quality if possible.Audacity users: `Sound Activated Recording' (in your Audacity Preferences) allows you to automatically record all your calls and can automatically pre-edit out long pauses for you if set correctly. (I fiddled with the sensitivity and it records perfectly between 'pick up' and 'hang up.') Some external recording devices and other audio editing software include S.A.R.Please seek a properly licensed legal adviser to become better aware of the applicable regulations in your area regarding recorded telephone calls and always comply with such laws. Any use of my tips about this device are for lawful purposes only to be used entirely at your own risk.

Works Great But Beware
As a VP of Customer Service I feel I owe all of you this review. I purchased 2 of these and one didn't work. I then plugged the other one into one of my supervisors phone and set it up with Audacity and it worked great. Now I tried the defective one again and it blew out my phone (mic stopped working and phone needed to be replaced). It also blew out my docking station on my laptop (began to smoke and quickly killed the audio card). Stupid me figured that it didn't like being plugged directly into my docking station so I bought a stand alone USB audio device. I plugged it in and my replacement phone (corporate Avaya 442D) that I purchased for $80 shorted out the same as the first. So one of the two I bought is clearly shorted and has killed 2 phones and my docking station ($80 x 2 plus docking station $150). I placed 2 calls into these guys and they returned both of my calls and went to my voice mail both times and told me that I should work with Amazon and get a pickup and refund. Which I have. Both of my messages indicated that I would like them to do the right thing and at least give me a credit of $80 (for the one blown out phone) and allow me to purchase something else and get some satisfaction. They obviously don't care about my situation even though I very nicely told them I was going to give them this negative review. So I had no choice but to follow thru...The one that works does a great job so I have reluctantly ordered another one (for I need two). Wish me luck! Now back to the product:I actually installed both Audacity (to record) and VLC so the file can be saved with Audacity into a FLAC file and then listened to using VLC. Works great and this allows the file size to be small and manageable.

Item did not work.
Item did not work. I have a corded, non-electric phone. Although the item did not come with instructions, I came onto Amazon to make sure I had installed it correctly - and had. The item did not work. And, I could not even get a dial-tone with it installed on my phone. I was very disappointed because I really wanted this item. However, when I notified the seller that it did not work, they automatically sent me a pre-paid return label to print-out and refunded the full cost of the item to my account. I would have preferred receiving an item that worked, but appreciated the hassle-free return policy. I won't buy another one of these on-line unless I have some assurance that it works.

Works great, but curly cord could use more length to it
I bought this for my work phone for when I need to do phone interviews and want a back up of the conversation. I borrowed a similar version from my coworker for awhile and then decided to buy my own. The straight cord plugs into my recorder and is very lengthy. The curly cord plugs into the part of my phone that I hold to my ear. It's rather short, causing the black box to hang by my face - rather annoying. It works great though. I've only used it once so far, so I hope to stretch out the curly cord or something.
