Shiruba Aqua Power Head Pump, 40-Gallon

I bought this pump to power a hang-on-the-back (HOB) refugium. The water pump runs quietly and has been reliable. It is getting the job done. A lot of service, for a small purchase price.I had never heard of Shiruba prior to purchasing this pump. I bought it because of its compatibility with that particular refugium. However, just about any low-flow water pump should work. The trick is making sure that the adapters that come with the pump will fit the tubing that came with your fuge (refugium). Even if they do fit, you may need to use plumber's teflon tape to ensure a tight connection.This is a very small unit. As you can see from the product photo, the unit was meant to sit at the bottom of the tank. However, it will operate at any angle. You can attach the suction cups to the side of the tank and use it that way to increase water circulation in your system. There are almost an unlimited number of potential uses for a small water pump. Use your imagination and your creativity. The pump was never meant to overcome high pressure, such as lifting water from a fill bucket on the floor to the top of an aquarium four feet from the ground. As such, this would not serve as a sump pump. Even if it could overcome the head pressure, the water flow is just not enough for that purpose. "Head" is the height that a particular pump can raise water.I can easily recommend this tiny water pump to you if you only want a low rate of flow. Some applications require a slower flow rate. For example, passing water through biological media will usually require a slow flow rate to allow for a lot of contact time between the water and the filter. This pump has a flow adjustment, allowing you to slow down the rate from the maximum 40 gph.Sometimes, you do get a lot, for a little. I would not be afraid to buy another Shiruba product in the future.

There is no easy way to put this in my tank. The suction cups are essentially in the wrong direction. There needs to be a 90-degree corner adaptor with this kit to make it work easily with most external refugium boxes. Yes you can make this work without it... it just takes some extra effort. Keep that in mind. Otherwise it seems to work well.

40 Gallons per hour should have been enough power for my needs, but it was so weak it could not even push the water through the tube! the tube was only 3 feet long!! A perfect waste of money...

Had to jimmyrig it to get it to start flowing properly - I was trying to use this to distribute Co2 through the attached line but the bubbles kept coming out whole. I took it out of the tank after two days.

I use it in my 10 gallon nano-reef's HOB fuge at full power. Reliable, sturdy, stays in place. I like that I can connect tubes to the intank.

Excellent and quiet, would have loved it even more if it came with some kind of tubing.

Not much flow but works for what I needed it for...It's quiet. However I'm sure the rating for 40 gallon is way off...more like a 5 gallonflow rate... So if your needing someting for 40, keep looking. The flow is perfect for my need which is why I gave 3 stars..
