Paper Automata: Four Working Models to Cut Out and Glue Together Paperback – January 1, 1998

The media could not be loaded. Frankly I am amazed this works as well as it does.. even though I tried my best I doubted it would turn out, but it is delightful! I think the paper is thick enough to do the job, but not be too hard to fold. The designs are adorable. The directions are clear, but not excessive. I had to look at the pictures to clarify one or two things. The suggestion to use the ruler is a good one. You could score the fold edge with something pointed but not sharp. I used modge podge and a little super glue which worked ok but the author recommends UHU all purpose (gel) or Bostik Clear. Looking forward to trying the other designs! Hats off the the author for such a well designed, thoughtful instructional book! Would recommend adult assistance for children wanting to do these crafts.

Just too much fun for making automatons! Several projects, easy to assemble , just cut out and tape or glue together. A fun book for adults and children to demonstrate simple machines with children...and just plain fun for all ages! This wold be a great book for kids to use and make their own toys, esp over the holidays!

This book is such fun. Great instructions, and printed models.

I have assembled some other automata designed by Rob Ives. Always well worth the time needed to cut out and assemble them. The four included in this book look to be as good as the others he offers. The mechanics are interesting. The automata are entertaining. The parts are not die cut or pre-scored.

Very interesting and informative. This gives a great mechanical understanding of automatons and their movements. Great design layout of the books and cutouts. Great instructions. Would make a great gift for a recipient of any age, or in my case for myself.

I bought this book and the Karakuri book at the same time. Karakuri book is excellent and more expensive. This one is cute but not as good paper and the designs are not as good either. If you just buy one buy the Karakuri. I bought these books to better understand how gears work and it did the trick. And the things I made were beautifully designed. This book has nice pictures but the designs are not as easy to complete as Karakuri.

I bought this for a Christmas present for grandchildren. Haven't given it to them yet. Hope I can keep from putting it together myself. Looks like fun.

Have made the four Automata from the book, turned out great. You do need to follow the instructions very carefully, and think it through before you glue, ie read the instructions again, some bits can be tricky. Will be a large jump though to making my own from scratch!
