Fantastic resource for translators
I have been a translator (German to English) since 1992. I work freelance, and have read many books on the business and practical side of running your own freelance translation business, but I would have to say, this one is the best. It covers seemingly all aspects of the business, from accounting and how to set your price, to marketing, all the technical aspects of the actual translation process, to things like copyright, and what to do when a client won't pay. I can't praise this book enough as THE resource for freelancers. The great advantage is that the author has been in the profession for many years and also ran a translation agency, so he has a unique perspective on the business. The insights you gain in this book will pay for the price, 100 times over. Trust me.

... of what the book would deal with and therefore disappointed
I had anticipated this would treat topics for people who are already in the field of translation and not a guide as to how to become a translator --- just had different expectation of what the book would deal with and therefore disappointed

Useful but a bit outdated
Most of the information is targeting setting up translation business in UK. The majority of technical requirements are outdated. No one these days using modems.

Well written and informative
The book is well written and contains a lot of useful information as well as the author's own experience of translating and living abroad. There are very good and illustrative examples of translation or file management that I am keen to adapt in my own practice. I already knew some bits of this book from conducting my own research, but it is nice to have it all in one place. I hoped to find some commonly translated documents templates that are not available online, in order to compare against my own work and improve the layout of the documents I prepare if necessary; unfortunately, that has not been included. What I have learnt for sure, it what it is like to work at a big translation company and I realised, that's not what I am looking for and I am developing my practice in another sector.I have ordered a fifth edition of this book and while some suggested it should be updated again, the information is sufficient for a beginner and you can always try for find more recent sources.

not great
Outdated. This book needs to be updated and republished. Not very helpful. Not very interesting. Not really worth reading. That's all...
