Cancer, You Picked The Wrong Girl

Realistic and funny
The day by day journey from suspicion, diagnosis and treatment I’d presented in great detail and with a sense of humour. It is book every person diagnosed with cancer can read and learn a lot about the journey with cancer. Though it looks like a light hearted account, there is a lot of depth to the insights shared throughout the book. I would strongly recommend to persons living with a diagnosis of cancer. Equally important for medical teams to read to understand what the I’ll person feels and how to be sensitive and supportive in their work. Great read. Once I started I could not put it down till the end.

Funny, irreverent, soul-shattering, tear-jerker, honest
Reading the book, one feels as if, the author is sitting next to you, narrating her story. Just like a friend would, she digresses before meandering back to it. It is so delightful and relatable. The reader feels all the emotions that the author went through in her fight. The reader can go from chuckling to wiping away tears within a few lines.

Made me smile, laugh and be sad at the same time
I have never known someone close to me fighting with cancer. So, I can lie all I want but the truth is, I have no clue what it’s like to be someone fighting with Cancer or to be their family member. I honestly, wouldn’t even know what to say to them. But thanks to “Cancer. You picked the wrong girl”, I know what not to say. They don’t need to hear “It will all be ok” by another person especially when nothing is certain in life. and they absolutely don’t need my advice. They already have plenty of it. But what they might really need is someone to just hold their hand, someone to just listen to them, be there for them. Sometimes silence does speak louder than words. The author talks about her journey and her fight with cancer. But the story is much more than that. The author has poured all her raw thoughts and fears into the book. Her past, her present, and the transition. Her life, her fight with health problems in the past, her career, her family, and her fear that came along with the illness, the fear of how it was going to affect her family and work. The mental struggle to determine what was best for her recovery from choosing the right doctor, treatment, and beast reconstruction. The fight in deciding what the right thing was while holding herself together through that tough phase. She not only showed how cancer changed her life but also how it affected the people around her. Some stayed by her side, some helped her whichever way possible. While some people didn’t know what to say or how to react, some people had a whole bunch of advice for. While her friends, family and husband were her rock throughout her journey, I feel, she was her biggest strength. I’m stunned by how well she was able to hold herself and carry on with her life as normally as she could through all this. She took it as another challenge and instead of allowing cancer to take the happiness out of her life, she fought for it head on straight and won. And even while reliving through her fight with cancer once again while writing this book, the author somehow managed to keep it light. She managed to make me smile, laugh and be sad at the same time.

Winning the unending battles in the mind
This is my first impression after reading the first half of the book that I received yesterday. Shormistha has amazing talent, of weaving the inner battles in the mind/the cat and mouse games, when in a life threatening/ changing situation. She provides all facts that would help others navigate similar situations, but keeps them capsuled in humour, in an 'objective & as is' narrative. Objectivity, openness and an ability to stitch together facts from different periods of her life make for such an enriching emotional experience, even for the reader. Must read for everyone; to understand the truth about life, which we seem to take for granted, as a matter of right sometimes, rather than being grateful for each moment.A must read book.

Funny. Sad. Serious. Frivolous. Philosophical.
Great book. Such an engrossing read. Finished nearly all of it in one sitting. My wife had breast cancer two years ago and we went to the same surgeon as Shormistha, so it all sounded familiar. This book is funny, sad, serious, frivolous, philosophical - all at the same time.

A Must Read Book
The description is vivid as vivid can be. It is as if the characters are known people around you, and the events are taking place right in front of you. Lucidly written, “Cancer, You Picked The Wrong Girl” makes you smile and cry at the same time. It is more than a first-person-account of the struggle of a cancer patient. It delves into human behaviour and relationships in tough times. While candidly sharing her personal experience, Ms Mukherjee shatters many a myth about the dreaded disease. It is for the readers to form opinions and draw conclusions/ lessons from the experience of this daring survivor. The book is not a (DOs and DONTs) guide for cancer patients, yet those who read this account will be much better prepared to ‘take on’ any disease (challenge) in life. Also, they’ll be inclined to (re)value their relationships and bonds with people. What Hrishikesh Mukherjee presented in the 1971 film ‘Anand’ was fiction and had a sad end. What Shormistha Mukherjee has presented is ‘fact’ and has a pleasant end. She kindles HOPE of success. The book is a perfect gift for someone you love and care for. It is only a matter of time––this book is bound to be a best-seller.
