super moisturizing
I needed a heavy, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic moisturizer. This fit the bill perfectly, with the bonus of being usable on my lips as well. It feels similar to Vaseline but less oily, and it absorbs nicely. I'm a fan!

This feels great on my lips!
My dermotologist recommended I buy this Vanicream Moisturizing Ointment for my dry lips. He said that it is what he and his family use for dry lips and other dry skin. It feels great on my lips and has prevented them from being so dry that they peel. I wish it came in a stick like Chapstick, but I haven't found it yet in that form. When I apply it to my lips, it makes them feel really moist and it lasts for quite a while. I have been a Carmex user for many, many years and it has always worked for me, but about a month ago, it quit working and my lips started peeling. Since I've been using this Vanicream ointment, my lips are soft and feel great again. It seems to be working really well!

Good for the Body and Knife Handles!
I'm still evaluating VaniCream's use as skin ointment, but I can comment on its use as a protective covering for wooden knife handles. VaniCream is hydrocarbon based, has no added fragrance but has a familiar paraffin odor and a nice paste consistency and is very water repellent. I rubbed a thin coating of VaniCream into my kitchen wooden knife handles, let the knives sit overnight for the ointment to "soak in" and removed the remaining film of the cream with a paper towel the next day. The result is a nice feeling, shiny, slightly darker colored wood. Water beads up on the handles. In the past (as commonly practiced) I have added the knives, handle first into a quart jar filled with clear liquid mineral oil and left them there for several days before removing them and wiping them with a paper towel. The VaniCream method works as well, and the result is a non-oily feeling handle. I don't know how long the coating lasts but if it lasted only a month, the application process is very simple and re-application would be a breeze.

Dermatologists aren't wrong
Ask your own dermatologist: for dry sensitive skin, an ointment is more effective than a cream, and cream is better than lotion. However, many/most ointments aren't a great feel for hands or large body areas--think Vaselinein large quantities. Vanicream is an ointment that spreads and sinks in much more like a cream but works like ointment. For active eczema, highly sensitive skin, or young children, fragrance free is best, so it's unscented. Has a faint neutral smell of it's own. However, I find that I use product much more if it's fun, and dry skin needs frequent replenishing, so I repot Vanicream into lots of small containers ( easy to find now that airplanes limit the size of toiletries). Then I gussy them up with a squirt of Crabtree and Evelyn Rose lotion and stir. I've distributed them into every bathroom, work desk, handbag , and endtable I the house. ( For the end tables, I use small decorative boxes, for the rest, plain plastic travel containers.)Fun to use, smells divine, and works better than any luxurious scented cream I've ever used at a fraction of the price.
