Memoir and Remains of R.M. M'Cheyne

This is the best Christian Book I have read thus far. It is a wonderful story of God's work in the life of one man and how that one life is still producing fruit today. Passionate! Devotional and full of humility, it is worth every minute you will spend reading it. The Wind of Holy Spirit blows across the pages of this book.

I was interested in this because I have benefited tremendously from M'Cheyne's Bible reading plan, which is published in various places (including in the back of the KJV Master Study Bible, also available on Amazon). Bonar's review of M'Cheyne's life provides an excellent sense of the man's character. One who enjoys reading Charles Spurgeon or Oswald Chambers would probably like this.

I enjoyed this book because it explored the depth of RMM's desire for personal holiness. I also gained much from it where Bonar would discuss the preaching style and content of RMM's public preaching ministry.

The Banner of Truth has published a book called Memoir & Remains of Robert Murray M’Cheyne by Andrew Bonar. This book was originally published in 1844, with the Banner of Truth first publishing it in 1960 (with many reprints following that). This book is an absolute gold mine! As the book mentions, “few books contain such variety and wealth of spiritual matter between their covers. As well as the life covering 174 pages, the work contains a good selection of letters (126 pages), sermons (203 pages), other writings (86 pages) and sacred songs (18 pages).” There is so much variety of excellent material in this book to provide a beautiful glimpse into the life and ministry of M’Cheyne!The book is essentially divided into six parts as shown above. The first section is a great memoir written by Andrew Bonar. If you want to read a biography on M’Cheyne, this is a great introduction to his life and ministry.The second section provides 61 letters that M’Cheyne wrote to different people. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading these letters, as they are extremely personal and provide a rich glimpse of M’Cheyne’s heart for the Lord and for Christ’s sheep.The third section consists of 28 sermons that M’Cheyne wrote and preached. This was one of my favorite sections because of M’Cheyne’s amazing ability to exegete and preach the Word of God! There is so much to be learned from his preaching today. He is a brilliant exegete and very Christ-centered in his interpretation and application.The fourth section is called “Specimens of his sketches of sermons”, and the fifth section “Published during his lifetime”. This is a smaller section of the book, but a truly wonderful aspect of this work. The sketches provide sermon outlines and written prayers that were prayed during the worship service, and the section on works published during his lifetime is a diverse section on different topics (i.e. reasons why children should fly to Christ; I love the Lord’s Day; Letter on communion with brethren of other denominations; etc.).Lastly, there are 14 songs that M’Cheyne wrote, and these are included in the final section of the book. These songs are sure to stir the reader’s heart to worship the Lord! They are beautiful songs that ought to be sung much more often in the church today.M’Cheyne was perhaps one of the most gifted and passionate pastors/preachers to serve the Bride of Christ! As you read the memoir, you are sure to arrive at that conclusion. It is sad for the church that he died at such a young age (29), for he was truly a blessing to the church. His understanding of Holy Scripture was amazing, and his level of maturity at such a young age is astounding. This book is perhaps the greatest work produced on M’Cheyne! Again, it is filled with a variety of excellent works from M’Cheyne, and coupled with the memoir by Andrew Bonar, this is one of the neatest and loveliest books that I own. It is very easy to understand, and it will be a wonderful addition to any Christian’s library. I can’t recommend it highly enough! He was born in Edinburgh Scotland. The year was 1813. He was the youngest child of the family and his name was Robert Murray M’Cheyne. Reverend M'Cheyne would go on to become an influential preacher and inspiration to many in Christianity.Were it not for Andrew Bonar we may not know much of M’Cheyne. Bonar took effort to chronicle the life of Robert M’Cheyne and the best book on the subject is titled Memoir & Remains of Robert Murray M'Cheyne. This particular work begins with a memoir to M'Cheyne relating some of his struggles, thoughts, and dealings as he went throughout his life. By using some of M’Cheyne’s journal entries we get some insight into the man. The book contains some of the letters that M'Cheyne wrote to various people with the intent of becoming more and more like Christ. Following the letters in the book come a sample of sermons by M’Cheyne. .These sermons show the heart of M’Cheyne and how he understood and applied the Scriptures. His desire to let go of worldly enticements and seek after Christ become all the more apparent as each sermon is read. M’Cheyne’s passion also protrudes as he desires that all who hear him find their calling and life in Jesus Christ.M’Cheyne was somewhat of a poet and would often used poetry to explain some of the thoughts and musings that he had. These poems are at the back of the book and are quite inspirational. For example, take a sample of a poem titled They Sing the Song of Moses: And oh! When, life’s dark journey o’er And death’s enshrouding valley past, We plant our foot on yonder shore, And tread yon golden strand at last Shall we not see with deep amaze, How grace hath led us safe along; And whilst behind--before, we gaze, Triumphant burst into a song! (p. 633c - 634a)M’Cheyne loved God and the peace that would come to him upon his death. He wanted all to know this peace and some of his poetry’s heart is apparent while reading.On a personal note, I took the challenge to read the whole Bible in one year following the readings outlined by M'Cheyne. Upon accepting this challenge, I wanted to learn more about this individual and found this particular book extremely helpful and insightful. I don't normally recommend books to everybody. However, I hardly make an exception with this book. The language may be difficult for a modern English reader but take the time to read this work.
