4 or 5 coates and let her cure for about a week
I will be honest; I was not patient enough and kind of learned exactly how important it is for this to cure. My first attempt was with white rustoleum spraypaint as the medium under the dry-erase. I expected it to be rough when cleaning, but after doing a bit of practice math I was given an interesting challenge. I normally use clear poly spray and I am very familure with how thise type of stuff can take a good while to cure. It really was not a shock to see that things would not erase completely..I ended up painting a thin layer of Grumbacher, Winsor Newton, and Basics acrylic. In order they were Titanium white, Opera Rose, and Ultramarine Blue. I used a cheap foam brush because I never can get a smooth surface with any of my normal paint brushes. When that dried I started layering coats. I put about 5 coats I think. I put them on rather thick because I wanted a god layer to protect the decerotive layer. After about 3 days I was carful to test it here and there. At 4 days it seemed to be usable enough to erase black marker off. Its been close to a week now and it works fabulously. My project is for a drafting table that will have this dry-erase sheet of metal on it as an option to be used for working with clients of comissions. I hope to do painted cabinetry. I totally recomend this dry erase spray and I will get more when ever I make dry erase for clients commissions.

Does not work
I bought six of these. Not a single one worked for dry erase. Total waste of money. I think the cans I was sent were faulty. I've bought this before at hardware stores and it worked, but all six cans from this order on amazon did not.

Can't wipe off Dry Erase marks
I was hoping this would work. I used the entire can on many coats for a 2.5'x3.5' wood base that was smooth, sanded, with several coats of white primer underneath.I applied many coats of the spray until I used it all up. At first I thought it would be great. It was easy to wipe off the marks. But if you leave the dry erase writing on for a day or two, it is horrible to get off. I had to resort to all types of different chemicals just to get the marks off. If you write on it and take it off in a hour or so, it is fine.I am looking at Rustoleum's hand applied coating, as a next step to recoup this white board. I trust Rustoleum, but this spray an stuff, obviously did not do it for me.I probably should have just bought a commercial white board.

Barely Worked
I sprayed three coatings over three days on two different boards and I could write on the boards and wipe them for 2 weeks, then the dry erase effect went away.

Don't use on white surface
It did work, but I used it on a white surface and it yellowed the surface. Next time, I will use it on a darker surface.
