TBW is 2500 TBW for the 4TB model.

Q: Since the red version is optimized for a nas, is there a problem if installed on a computer?

No, not a problem. This NAS SSD can be used in the place of a regular SSD. I use these NAS SSD as boot drives in automation computers that run 24/7. Work flawlessly.

Q: Is it compatible with the synology ds-720+ nas as cache memory?

Yes, but speed is limited. This model is M.2 SATA, not NVMe. Cannot operate through onboard NVMe slots. Need SATA adaptor and install through conventional HDD slots with a maximum of 6 Gb/s speed. Likely only capable to work as read-only cache.

Q: Is it slc, mlc, tlc, or qlc? they are advertising it as a "nas ssd," it should be at least be mlc for that form of performance?

THE WD red SSD series is TLC. Note that a number of reliability studies have shown that TLC and MLC have similar reliability factors, and the WD drive has a large amount of sparing, which provides a very high write endurance, >700 TB for the 500 GB model. The WD SA series is designed for NAS caching, which has very high write ratios, but also works well as a normal drive or RAID drive.

Solid speed and reliability

I am using two of these in a Synology hybrid RAID. They are fast and I have had no issues with them thus far. I am getting the rated speeds. Just note some SMB 3 settings you will need to make in Windows to get the max speed benefits. You can find that info on LTT.

Works great!

I decided to switch my old HDD to a more compact SSD (Western Digital Blue) about two years ago. The transition went smoothly but the drive ended up crashing after about 6 month with no way to recover any data. Luckily I maintain full backups. Western Digital honored their replacement warranty and ended up sending me a Red SSD to replace the blue. The Red has been running perfectly ever since. I ended up upgrading several other PCs to Red with no issues so far whereas other Blue have giving me multiple read/write issues and finally crashing.I typically buy the 1TB Red version, but I'm annoyed to find them more difficult to find over the past 6 months and the price almost doubling.
