Dull and disappointing
Difficult to grasp what's going on here. It's only when I got to the end that the whole confusing dull mess become a little clearer, and by then my interest in it was zero. There's a few good shoot-outs with the gangsters favourite weapon, the Thompson, but they seem to be just thrown in out of context, just for effect, apart from just ONE good incident involving the brilliant Albert Finney. There are too many slow boring talkative scenes between Gabriel Byrne and the unimpressive female lead Marcia Gay Harden. Then best thing to say about these is that they should be avoided. They slow down what little pace the movie has and bring it to a boring dead stop.I skipped most of them which had the desired effect of getting the film over as quickly as possible.A big disappointment. It made me want to see some of the great gangster movies of the 30s and 40s which such stars as Humprey Bogart, James Cagney and Edward G Robinson. Any of these movies would undoubtably be far superior.KAN
