Kubb Empire Tournament Size Hardwood Kubb Yard Game Set Regulation Size with Backpack, Instruction Card, and Bottle Opener

I am a long time Amazon customer but a first time Amazon reviewer. I rely upon reviews for many of my purchases. Since this is a small business and there was only 1 review posted for this product when I purchased this set (I see 2 now), I feel compelled to provide a review and let others know about the solid feel and high quality of the product and the responsiveness of the company. I am very pleased with the product so far (given that it is winter and the yard is covered in snow, I have not had a chance to play, yet) and believe it is a good deal at $70 relative to other sets I have seen.A frequent question about many Kubb sets is about size and weight. If you are reading this, you probably have seen the wide variations in product dimensions and materials used. Many sets are no where close to "official", if that is important to you. The set I received is spot on, or close to it, with the official U.S. rules (search US National Kubb Championship Rules; it should be the first link; v3.2 is posted as of 1/2/2017).I pulled out my digital calipers and my scale to check (I had them around, so why not?). The ranges below shown are across all the pieces within each type. Any one piece was quite uniform (within 0.02cm or less, typically). As shown below, this set is essentially within a millimeter or two of the specifications (let's say within the variation of natural materials, humidity changes and human error in taking the measurements).6 Batons: Ranged 4.55cm - 4.57cm diameter by 30cm in length ("official" size is 4.4cm by 30cm)10 Kubbs: Ranged from 6.93cm - 7.02cm on a side by 14.89cm - 14.93cm in height ("official" size is 7cm x 7cm x15cm)1 King: 8.88cm - 8.99cm (measured multiple locations) by 30cm in height ("official" size is 8cm x 8cm x 25cm to 9cm x 9cm x 30cm)As for weight, the "official" rules only include a Recommended Tournament Weight (which the footnote says is based on measuring available competition sets). The Kubb Empire set is at the upper end of the range and slightly heavier in some cases (which may be due to better species or denser wood?). If you are one of those people concerned about the pieces being too light, you should by happy with this set.Batons: 305.4g - 354.7g (recommended 0.2kg - 0.3kg)Kubbs: 393.3g - 509.4g (recommended 0.3kg - 0.5kg)King: 1,483g (recommended 0.8kg - 1.3kg)A few other comments you may be interested in knowing:1) Each piece is made from solid wood. The pictures posted on Amazon show the Kubbs and King to be 2 or more pieces of wood glued together (you can tell by the wood grain in the picutres), but this was not the case with the set I received. Glue joints can be very strong and can add stability to wood (inhibits from warping). So, this is not necessarily a pro or a con, either way, and depends on your perspective.2) I emailed the company with some questions prior to ordering, and the reported material is rubberwood. It is certainly not pine. It is a hardwood species and feels solid, but beyond that, I can only report what I was told. From Wikipedia: Rubberwood is a light-colored medium-density tropical hardwood obtained from the Pará rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis), usually from trees grown in rubber plantations. Rubberwood is commonly advertised as an "environmentally friendly" wood, as it makes use of plantation trees that have already served a useful function.3) The set packs very nicely into the included case. The case has carrying handles and a separate set of backpack straps. The handles feel solid and secure. I have less confidence in the backpack straps and will likely not rely upon them too much (though, it would be nice to sling it over a shoulder). I am concerned that the stitching may not hold up. I have no problems to report so far - the set is new, after all. Call it a hunch based on years of lugging around heavy books in backpacks. Your mileage and impression may vary. I would be happy to be wrong about this.4) The wood is unfinished, just sanded smooth.5) Lastly, I would like to commend Kubb Empire for its excellent responsiveness. When I was searching for a Kubb set and came across this listing with only 1 review, I decided to find the company's website and email some questions through the Support link. That was Friday afternoon, Dec. 23rd (yes, I know, ...). I received a response that same afternoon from the owner of the company with answers to my questions. I received these on Monday just a few days from when I ordered. I was super impressed with the quality. Three of the pieces had fault line cracks when received, but still ok enough to play with in the mean time. I’m sure the company will make it good from all the positive reviews I’ve seen so far.I gave mine a light sanding and painted them to the colors of various Scandinavian flags. Beautiful quality that I would’ve given all five stars if it hadn’t been for the fault line cracks in a few of the pieces, one of which was the king.I would still highly recommend this set. Great heft and tournament sized. Very well made.Edited 08/06/19. Well I’m sorry to say I may have to change my rating as I still have not heard a word back from the company since I emailed them. First they have no contact information on their site despite what it says here. The only way I was able to find an email address is because they include it on a bunch of business cards that come with the Kubb set in case your friends want a set also. I wonder now if they would answer the email if I was a potential new customer? Very disappointed since I read so many good things about their customer service.I’ll give it another week and maybe try to email again before changing the rating because the set is nice but the CS is definitely lacking.Edited 08/21/19, received three absolutely flawless, beautifully made replacements for the pieces that were cracked. I am changing the review to a perfect five stars and I would highly recommend this set. Apparently my direct email messages were not being received by them. If you need to contact them I would highly recommend going through the amazon site and using their contact procedure.

Don’t often write reviews but I’m a pretty avid Kubb player and wanted to talk about my experience with this set. Been playing Kubb with friends for a few years now, and like to think of myself as pretty knowledgeable on the history, gameplay, culture, etc. a Kubb Konnoisseur if you will. When a baton from my tried and true set went up in flames (PRO TIP: Don’t teach people how to play too close to your backyard bonfire) I decided it was time to get a whole new kit. There’s a lot of Kubb sets out there, varying in price and quality. First set I got ended up a real junker… looked like something my buddy Pete would make if you gave him a 12-pack of Strohs and a hammer and chisel. It was playable, but not something I’d bring out around other Kubb players and I swear I got at least 2 splinters before it too became kindling for the aforementioned weekend blaze.I finally decided on a Kubb Empire set and I have not been disappointed. From the minute I opened it up and smelled the sweet scent of tropical hardwood I knew I was dealing with a quality set. Gone were the worries of splinters, the questions on legality (yes, these are official size) and any thoughts of these not lasting till you can hand them down to your kids. I’ve already got my 1 year old throwing a decent bullet. It’s well made and feels like a Kubb set should.Let me also mention the carrying bag. Look, it’s not required, I’ve thrown my previous Kubb set into everything from a stinky gym bag, to a louis vuitton valise (another PRO TIP: Don’t put Kubb Sets in your wife’s Louis Vuitton luggage without asking). That said, it’s really handy to have a dedicated bag to throw over your shoulder and lug everything to wherever you’re gonna set up the pitch. Nice little value add on this great set.I’ve played a few dozen rounds with Kubb Empire so far, and haven’t been disappointed in the least. If you’re new to Kubb, get this and learn a great game. If you’re like me and been playing for years, get this and play with an official size/weight quality set. Or get a set for your friends so you’ve got more people to play Kubb with. Either way I think you’ll be happy with your purchase.
