Great NBME Shelf Exam Practice
This book was very useful for Family Medicine shelf exam. It was especially useful because there aren't any Family Medicine sections in UWorld or Kaplan online qbanks. A lot of the questions in here were basically the same as what I saw on test day. A lot of my peers recommend Case Files, but I found this one more useful. If you had to get this book, go for the Kindle version because it makes switching back and forth between question and answer very easy.

Debatable answers and questions. Errors unchecked.
Too many arguable answers and question stems. The questions were quick to answer. In light of this, the explanations were simple and effective. However this applies to about 1/2 of the 500 questions. The book is definitely worth the purchase though because you can run through the questions in 2 days and you'll cover a lot of topics. Then you can read more about what you got wrong with other books like case files or a family medicine textbook. So in other words I would just use pretest as a tool to highlight weaknesses and then do the actual studying elsewhere. Also after running through about 100 questions you can gauge which questions are good quality and which questions are poorly thought out.

Not recommended for shelf exam
Being a 3rd year medical student, I purchased this book to study for my family med rotation and also prepare for the shelf exam. I was disappointed in the book. It really did not help me at all. I found the book to vague when it came to the details required both during my rotation and the shelf exam. Although pretest helped me in our rotations it did not help me with this one!

great prep for the shelf!
I thought pretest family med third edition was good preparation for the family med shelf exam; the exam is very broad and it's difficult to read everything you need to for it especially if you haven't had internal med yet. So this book was a much easier, efficient way to prepare for the test...the questions tested on all the "must know" concepts for the shelf, and the explanations were pretty good overall. I personally would have liked some of explanations to be a bit more detailed here and there, and have some of the main concepts of explanations be bolded for emphasis, but still good explanations overall and pretty comprehensive. Would definitely recommend going through all the questions twice to solidify the info, and reading ambulatory care step up to medicine would be good too. One thing that may be a downside is that pretest may not help too much during the actual rotation when docs "pimp" you on qs, since for me, it's hard to retain info via a q and a format unless I go through the qs and as twice...and I did go through them twice but this was by then end of the rotation and a little late to impress a lot :-)...but that may be me personally, and I'm sure many could retain the info the first time through. But, a good, comprehensive source!

This book is outdated. I did one random question ...
This book is outdated. I did one random question from each of the first three sections and all of them had explanations that do not match current AAFP and USPSTF guidelines. They haven't updated to JNC 8 guidelines and are still using JNC 7. This book got returned. Stick to the free AAFP questions if you want accurate answers and explanations.

Good preparation for shelf exam, good for kindle
I found this book very helpful as a question-book to help me study for the family medicine shelf exam. The questions are challenging and the answers provide good explanations. I have the kindle version, and it works great for the e-reader. You can just tap on the question number to switch between questions and answers-- something I haven't found optimized in some other e-reader question books.

It's okay...
It is really just okay. I feel it is decent prep for a shelf exam, but you definitely couldn't rely solely on this book. If you really need questions to study, I'd probably still get it. However, if you can study by just reading other books, I'd try to find something better. There are several times throughout the book where the answer contradicts what it says is the correct answer. There are also questions where you feel like you have to try to read the mind of the author to figure out what they are asking.

Love the ease of use with kindle
I read the other reviews and got this for my kindle. I really like being able to answer the questions and quickly see the answers without flipping through a book. I did use it with other references, though. Good buy for me.
