Awesome device!
My kids love this device! They enjoy learning to problem solve which letter makes the word. We do not use the timer yet as they are not ready for that but their understanding of words has gotten a lot better because they are constantly playing with this. It's also small and light enough to carry with to places. The only issue I have is turning off the sound I struggle putting it in mute mode but honestly it's nice to hear the positive dings when they get the word right.

Poor Screen
Got this for practicing spelling concepts for my 6 year old son for Christmas. The concept is what I expected. There are three levels. The first level is basic three-letter words. Level 2 is four-letter words. Level three is four-letter words with special sounds. The quality is less than what I expected. While the "game" is to see how many fill-in-the-blanks you can choose correctly in a sixty-second time span, there is nothing that indicates that time is running. There is only a sound when you switch between levels. On certain levels it makes a tic-tock sound when starting, but not always. Additionally, it is *VERY* difficult to read the screen. Some of the lights aren't as bright as the others in the "bars." And of course, similar to cheap calculator screens, if the light hits it just right, all the "bars" seem as though they are equally lit. The lettering isn't like the one pictured. Because portions of the screen do not light at all, I am hoping that we got a dud and have requested a replacement item to be shipped to us so we can give it another go. My son likes the concept and is content to play it except for the pesky problem of it not working. BTW, it uses 3 AAA batteries. UPDATE: As usual, Amazon.com replaced the item without any hassles and the new item works great--very pleased.

Original & replacement defective - DO NOT BUY
I would give it zero stars if I could. It’s a cool idea but the product sucks. Bought this as a Christmas gift for my kid. So disappointing when we put batteries in it and the screen worked for less than two minutes, then went blank. About one minute later the buttons stopped working. I replaced the batteries, still didn’t work. Requested a replacement through Amazon which was smooth and fast. Second product barely works—the screen is faintly visible and only from the perfect angle. Not usable because can’t tell what letter is being displayed, which is the whole point of the game and learning to read. No change with a fresh set of batteries. The screw holding the battery compartment in place is in so tight that removing it for the first time stripped the head of the screw. Now of course I got busy with life and didn’t return promptly and it’s such a headache. I read the other reviews about the screen problem and I figured it was worth a try anyway in case we got a working model. I was wrong. The quality control on these products is terrible and seems like more of them are defective than the number that work properly. Don’t waste your money.

PR Word Whiz Electronic Flash Cards
My grand daughter LOVES this game. She is excellent with cross word puzzles et al (at age 10) and this game was a perfect gift to her. Well packaged and there was no damage. Received earlier than was scheduled by Amazon. Always happy with Amazon and their partners!

kids were not a fan
I bought this word whiz electronic flash card for my middle and oldest son. For my oldest to work on his spelling and middle son to work on vocabulary. Unfortunately this quickly turned into how to cheat the game but randomly pressing various buttons to get points and within seconds I heard a parent's worst fear "I am bored!". The thought behind the design was well thought but didn't keep my 5 year old's or 7 years old attention much longer. I did have to find batteries for this handheld word game, I do wish it was more interacting and batteries were included. I am a huge fan of Learning Resources products, unfortunately this was not on our top list. I would still recommend giving it a try, you never know maybe your children will enjoy it.

Engaging, educational product
Well designed, easy to use electronic educational toy that is perfect for 1st or 2nd graders (or advanced kindergarten kids). This is not quite as versatile or advanced as the Speak'n'Spell of the old days, but it's compact size makes it perfect to fit in a backpack for travel -- just be sure parents have a few extra batteries on hand.

No volume
There's no volume control but I just put some scotch tape over the speaker. My son does really well with it. Good "electronic" to have around as a learning tool

Bought for my 6 year old and he loves it. Gives him a challenge while keeping him entertained. It's just a simple set up, no uploading nothing for parents to or monitor. I would totally recommend to others.
