Weaving is a traditional art form and means of personal artistic expression for many women, so the pieces are heavily imbued with symbolism. Symbols such as 'hands on hips', 'the evil eye', 'snakes', 'rivers' and 'birds' have unique meanings in Turkish culture. Often the weavers include stories of their own lives in the art.
