Didn't realize I loved it until it was over
I had kind of a hard time getting through this book because I found myself very aggravated by the narrator. The way the book was written, though, really kept me going because the writing is so fluid and pulls you into the next chapter. Initially i wasn't quite sure about it...and as I continued on, I found myself getting more and more absorbed in the very human emotions portrayed in this novel. By the time it ended, I found myself teary-eyed and rooting for the main character. I've never read a book before where I was unsure about it until I finished it and had some time to think about it. I'm very impressed with this author and look forward to reading more of his work.

A Great High Wire Act
How do you make a self-centered, self-destructive jerk compelling?By breathing life into him the way author Krans has. Jake is a summer camp director with a pill popping habit that makes Johnny Cash look like an altar boy. He is hanging on by a thread. But what emerges – and what makes this a deep read – is that Jake is in a lot of pain, and is simply trying to dampen that pain with any and every chemical he can get his hands on.The high wire of it all is how Krans deftly paints Jake’s arc: he undergoes real transformation, but it never feels sappy or sentimental or untrue to the character. Krans’ passionate first person voice and acid wit help.By the end of the book, I felt nothing but compassion for Jake and the kids in his care. If you’ve ever been in pain, and grasped – however blindly – for a way to cope with it, this book is for you. It’s about human frailty, and ultimately, human hope.

Can't put it down
I know my camp directors were never like this, and for the sake of all children out there, I hope one like main character Jake doesn't exist anywhere! Sadly, they probably do exist. But this guy has some serious issues, which makes the book a fascinating read. I started it on a Monday and finished it the next day. There are some messed up parts and there are some emotional parts, almost bringing me to tears when the narrator recounts memories of his father. The book really picks up near the end and you can't put it down.Great read, highly recommended!

The mirror we all need to see
Without apologies, this book finds the worst in all of us and shows how wonderful that part can be. At every place, the narrator makes neither the choice we want him to or the one we expect, but instead stays true to a moral compass we can't figure out for most of the book. It is repetitive and personable -- no matter how repulsed I was, I still couldn't stop rooting for the narrator. On top of that, the book is gorgeous. The cover, font, and even paper are a cover to look at as well as read.

Summer camp daze
If you've ever worked at a summer camp before this book resonates and hits WAYYYY too close to home...It follows a pill-popping camp director whose counselors walk out on the first night and he's left with 40 campers and two other counselors... He hates kids and uses the camp just as a way to get some more pills...This book gets into his mind as he hits bottom and everyone suffers...Riveting read that leads to a fitting conclusion...Couldn't put it down!

Riveting
This novel kept me reading for hours on end, very riveting and exciting. The story of a drugged up summer camp director that could care less about the kids and staff has to face what he hates more then anything, dealing with the kids. There is a definite transition in the director and maybe a few lessons for the reader. Takes you back to fond memories of childhood at camp. Can't wait for the next novel.

Yet Another Chuck Wanna-Be
They say that all plots and writing is derivative. This book is total proof of that. The guy thinks he's Chuck P, and its evident in his writing. There is nothing worse than someone who tries to write like another writer, than having his or her own voice. But, what can you expect from people who self-publish.
