Excellent
I read Neverwhere earlier in the year and thought it was great. I haven't really read a lot of fantasy stuff and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. For £1.99 I thought I'd give this a go. It's a short story (fifty-six small pages) based in that world and it's a lot of fun. I wouldn't say it's essential to have read Neverwhere beforehand but I think it helps to understand the significance of some of the characters and locations.

Quirky fantasy at its best
An absolutely superb example of quirky fantasy at its best. The story relates to a personal loss suffered by the Marquis de Carabas (One of my favorite characters from Neverwhere) A loss that is profoundly upsetting. His coat - a magnificent example of elegance, style and mystery - has been taken from him. The problem is, the Marquis doesn't know how, he doesn't know where, nor does he know by whom. What follows is a compelling adventure through the lowways of London Below, where the Marquis is forced to take risks, dice with death, and use all his considerable charm to stay one step ahead of his enemies while endeavoring to reclaim that which distinguishes him from all others. It's a short story - but if you're a fan of Gaiman - one you shouldn't miss.

Entertaining short read
This was quick, short and full of humor and wit. If you've read Neverwhere, you'll want to read this, it's just as good! It was nice to get back into that London underworld of sorts. It took me a couple of pages to jog my memory, but it all came back to me as I read on. I must say, I disagree with the reviewers who said you need to have read Neverwhere to understand this. I'm not sure you need to. I read Neverwhere ages and ages ago, and reading this book, I didn't even remember the Marquis or his coat that well, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment of it at all.The Marquis is entertaining and is desperate to get his coat back. How he does it? I'll let you read and find out for yourself!

A Delight from Neil Gaiman!
In "How the Marquis Got His Coat Back", Neil Gaiman continues the Marquis de Carabas' story from the events of his novel "Neverwhere". The Marquis' adventures takes him through more of London Below, introducing a two separate cults, one ruled by The Mushroom and the other by Shepherds, as well as the Marquis' brother Peregrine and an old enemy, the Elephant. Gaiman offers a glimpse of how the Marquis defined himself, writing, "The Marquis had known whom he had wanted not to be, when he was a boy...He had, instead, wanted to be elegant, elusive, brilliant and, above all things, he had wanted to be unique" (p. 33)."How the Marquis Got His Coat Back" originally appeared in the short story collection "Rogues", edited by George R.R. Martin. This particular edition will be a joy to fans of Gaiman's work and could serve as a good introduction to new readers, though it does contain minor spoilers for "Neverwhere". Currently, it is only available through British booksellers.

I recently read Neverwhere & loved it. This little (& it is small folks, almost pocket sized) book is a great add on to a brilliant character. Read it in a day!!!!Just beware of the shepherds of Shepherds Bush !!!!!Great little book to take on a train journey.
