The Walking Dead Season 7 [DVD] [2017]

Mellows out a bit after the season opener
UPDATE: After 6 episodes I have to say "SPEED UP THE PLOT!!" The season premier was packed full of drama and excitement and fear and everything else. Since that time it's been kind of a drag. Plot elements that could have been put in place in 15 minutes are given 70 minute full episodes. I can see that they are setting up the story universe like a chess match, where they are getting all the pieces in position to make a group assault on Neegan. That's pretty obvious. But it's taking FOREVER to get there. The story is becoming too fragmented. The main characters have barely been in season 7 through 6 episodes. Through episode 6 the overarching plot of the show has moved about 1 week forward overall. Meaning it's been all of a week since Neegan introduced the survivors to Lucille. Speed it up!Original review below....There's been a ton of talk that The Walking Dead went too far this time in the season 7 opener. I disagree. In the first 6 seasons of this show we've seen people eaten alive by zombies on a regular basis. We've seen people shot. We've see people stabbed. We've seen Hershel's leg amputated with no pain killers. We've watched Carol kill a psychotic little girl. We've seen the core group deal with literal cannibals who wanted to kill/cook/eat them. We've seen countless zombies blown up, burned, heads smashed in, etc. For that matter we've attentively watched the entire fall of civilization and seen the remnants of society collapse into complete chaos. So I fail to see how someone getting thumped with a baseball bat is somehow 'over the line'.Also consider that the entire episode where Neegan is using his bat to instill fear in Rick's crew after Rick tried to take power away from Neegan is taken from real life events. On May 7, 1929 Al Capone hosted a dinner party for all of the high level mobsters who worked for him. Capone knew that 2 of them men were plotting to kill him to take over his empire. So with the intent to scare the living snot out of the rest of his crew so badly they would be far too scared to ever cross him, Capone beat both men to death with a baseball bat in front of everyone else. That is a real life event that actually happened, and the Season 7 opener for The Walking Dead pretty much parallels those real life events. (Guy in charge is threatened so he publicly kills two people with a baseball bat to keep everyone else in line. Exactly the same.) If that sounds familiar it's because Robert De Niro portrayed that event in the 1987 movie The Untouchables. That scene has become one of the more iconic moments in film history. Was it okay 30 years ago because they were wearing tuxedos?I think The Walking Dead made it uncomfortable to watch, largely because you are so invested in these characters by now that losing someone you feel like you know actually hurts a little. While watching it I had the same helpless feeling that the characters on the screen did.The show really immerses the audience into the story like that. You think you're just watching TV but you find yourself connected to the characters and you feel like you're part of Rick's group....or Neegan's group now as the case may be.As for the season opener, they made it hard to watch. But I think the show runners skillfully knew what the line was that would have been too far (Carl's arm) and took you right to that point, pushed you over it just a little bit, then tugged you back to a point where you were still uncomfortable but weren't turning off the TV. If Neegan had let Rick do it (if you're seen it, you know what I mean, if you haven't...don't worry about it) I think it would have been too far for me. But he didn't. They stopped just short of making the show too hard to watch. The end result is that I'm now more committed to the rest of season 7 than I've been for the previous 6 seasons combined. This Neegan business is going to prove to be an even tougher challenge than the hordes of walkers they dealt with on their long trip from Georgia to Virginia. Neegan makes the cannibals of Terminus look like a church choir.Remember when the biggest challenge to the survivors was getting Hershel to realize that the walkers weren't just sick people that should still be loved and cared for? Those early episodes are on par with Sesame Street compared to what the survivors are dealing with now. The Governor? That dude looks like Mr Rodgers compared to Neegan. Somehow the apocalypse just keeps getting worse! At least in some places...like wherever Rick seems to be at any given moment. The Kingdom that is going to be featured prominently in season 7 looks like a nice oasis. After meeting King Ezekiel in episode 2 and seeing The Kingdom it's pretty clear that there is still good in this post apocalyptic world and that the entire season 7 isn't going to be death and destruction. So while the season premier was tough to watch, the rest of the season looks like it'll be on par with other seasons. The production value stays high for season 7. That makes sense at the overall monetary value of the show keeps going up. They clearly aren't cutting the production budget. And it is nice that they are starting to make bad people into a bigger threat than the walker hordes. I figure it's been about 2-3 years since the outbreak (based on the age of Judith, who is a good reference point for how much actual time has passed on the show). So it makes sense that the number of walkers is starting to decline in areas where survivors are. Eventually even a zombie has to rot away or get trapped somewhere. And groups of survivors are starting to grow more powerful and fight one another, just like I would assume will happen when society eventually does fall apart. Just look at places on earth today where civilized society has collapsed. Aside from the zombies, this stuff actually happens. To the parents groups who think this shouldn't be on TV....learn how to say 'No' to your kids. I promise it's good for them to hear the word once in a while. It's a show that airs at 9pm on a school night. If your young kids are watching this, you're parenting wrong. It's not AMC's fault that you can't say 'no' for your precious snowflake. If you don't like the show and want to leave a 1 star review of it, more power to you. I get that this isn't for everyone. But don't act like the show should be banned because it's not for you.

The season you hate to love
It has been a long twisted road through Season 7 so far. Each episode has been like eating someone else's vomit. It is bad enough when a show makes you have to eat your own vomit (we always called this a meechum)... but to actually eat someone else's... that's unbearable. I have to confess that I have been seriously put off by the number of times they could have killed Negan and either never did or simply failed. Karl has been the biggest let down but Rick... we have seen him literally bite a guy's neck out before... so he in fact eats guys like Negan for a snack. How has he let this tiny little guy psychologically conquer him?We have given them an incredible amount of slack this season... so we are long overdue for some serious retribution. I am talking the kind that sees all of the Saviors slowing being consumed by walkers from the feet up. After episode 8 however it looks like we may be coming around and getting back on track. This really has been the season that we hate to love.UPDATE: I just watched episode 16 and it is obvious one of the major writers has left or died. I am not a follower of the background work to create shows because it tends to take away my ability to suspend belief. However... the battle scene at Alexandria was laughable. It was as if they had two endings they wanted to do but couldn't decide which one. The first ending was the one where Sasha emerges 'Sofia-like' from the coffin to temporarily distract everyone from the absolute dominant position that the Savior's had put Rick and his clan in. Of course it was not Sofia-like because we saw her take the pill and the vertical coffin meant that she was coming out standing up instead of laying down which would not have been much of an ambush on Negan (how did Sasha know the coffin would be vertical... they must have told her right?). When the shooting started there should have been a fairly uneven trade of deaths and Rick's band including Rick should have been all but wiped out. How did he survive standing up on that platform and why didn't she just shoot him in the head immediately? The second ending was the one where they were all rounded up and Negan was just about to crush a skull and they so desperately wanted that tiger to eat someone (They liked it so much the tiger did it twice!).Instead of picking one scenario and just ending the ridiculous reign of Negan they orchestrated both and ended up with a huge "palava" of broken scenes of people running in different directions and then stopping and others running around cars like they just discovered the group they were already running with! What was that one scene with Maggie??!?!?! Personally for all of our anguish and pain I feel like they owed us better. Here are some things that should have happened:1. That cow that leads the trash people should have died being eaten by a walker and smashed in the head by both Rick and Negan (if they could have pulled that off I would have been impressed).2. Carl should have finally died... because he should have either killed Negan four or five times before if not in this episode when he had the chance... he was one of the first to rip off the rounds when the shooting started and didn't he see Negan on the ground wrestling a zombie?3. King Ezekiel should have been eaten by his tiger... ok maybe not eaten by his tiger but at the very least killed to put him out of his ridiculous misery. He really is not carrying that whole Shakespeare thing very well. It worked for one episode and now it just seems... silly.4. One of either Negan, Simon or that guy with the burn scar on his face (Dwight?) should have died. Let's face it... they all suck and need to die. Simon because he is just a bad actor poaching Negan's character, Negan because he is an angry 250 lb sociopath being played by a 150 lb ex hippy and Dwight because anyone named Dwight should have died by now in the zombie apocalypse... or maybe just because he is a wishy-washy, backstabbing, freak show that they can't figure out what to do with.5. Eugene should have died... because he is Eugene and he sucks... especially now because he killed Sasha.

They Walk Among Us - Pure gruesome entertainment
I watched this on BluRay after watching all the previous seasons again, all in a row, in a pure zombie-fest. The BluRay video and audio is excellent but what truly is super excellent is, believe it or not, some of the extras which should be viewed after the episodes. They are frequently hilarious and always informative. Really, the extras are a must and anyone not seeing them is missing out. Also of note is the soundtrack by Bear McCreary who really should get a mention. He's a superb composer and the soundtrack at the end of Season 7, is particularly worth hearing. At the time of writing, you can hear some (or all of) the WD soundtrack on YouTube.Of course, as many WD fans will agree, Seasons 6 and 7 could not top Season 5 and there were times when Season 7 kept lapsing into maudlin moments but overall it was great. Episode One of 7 is a bit tough to take but that is more down to emotional angst than gore (although gore is also present - is it ever not in The Walking Dead?)Some of the script writing on S7 is a bit iffy, to say the least. So many implausibilities and one might wonder why anyone would follow Rick to the kitchen never mind in fighting for their lives against zombies and the ruthless living. Turns out that the latter are the ones to watch out for but we all know that anyway. The characters in the WD are seriously good, including the baddies, and we all have our favourites and those that we are rooting to have an early demise and put us out of our misery. For the harsh critics of Season 7, I would ask 'where is your sense of humour?'. If nothing else S7 is full of entertaining wonder at the stupidity of some people and lack of ingenuity. If you like to laugh in the face of other people's adversity, you might like the website that I found. Just search for FunnyorDie The Walking Dead but do be aware that the reviews there are loaded with spoilers as well as hilarious and astute comments.

We're on easy street.....and it feels so sweat......
After you get past the carnage of the 1st episode you will be surprised how much you will laugh in this season. Negan is so funny even though he is causing so much tension and heartache i cant help but love his wit and absolute audacity throughout. He has such a wicked sense of humor it is so contagious. Not only that but I cant help but want to see how he reacts to all the different characters, especially Carl. He is the one bad guy I never want to die.Man this season is tense through out the entire thing and every episode had me gasping or reacting in some sort of way. I am worried for season 8 that it wont be able to come up to this standard.

Good, but maybe getting a bit too samey
Season 7 was another good one in parts, although I'm starting to worry it's all starting to feel a bit too samey and, as much as I hate to say it, getting a bit boring. The series's explosive start seems to descend into filler episodes and it's not until about three quarters of the way through it starts to pick up again. I think maybe having so many different groups has made the series seem a bit too disjointed and spread the character writing too thinly. I watched this as a box set as back to back episodes so I could live with that, but if I had to watch one weekly I would have sadly switched off.

It doesn't get any better than this...braaaainz!
Zombies gore and action, If you don't like these three things in a TV series then you best stay well clear of this one. The fantastic TV series the walking dead is all about the end of civilisation and the people that are unlucky enough to survive, as a virus turns people (dead people) into the living dead. These baby's don't just want brains but the tasty flesh off your every day human. Kids, adults and seniors all want a piece of you, literally! If you love zombies and gore your going to go orgasmic watching this. Better than a lot of horror films, i was generally shocked at some of the scenes which is ALWAYS a great compliment to the producers, and the story line is to die for. :P I would have givien it 10 stars if i could.

Like most who have reviewed
Like most who have reviewed, i love twd, series 1-6 great, first episode of series 7 fantastic, one of the best episodes ever, then....what happened? SPOILERS. A group of junkyard survivors who have forgotten how to speak english??? why? A really bad cgi tiger that looks like it belongs in a kids film not twd, this tiger pops up in the final episode and attacks negans men, how can it tell the difference between negans men and the hill top people and ricks lot ? Well it must be a magic tiger as a real tiger would just go for the nearest idiot, goody or not. Add to that the series is just soooooo slow. Please be better series 8.
