HISTORY IN YOUR HAND
Buck created the 110 folding knife to compete with a fixed blade. For many decades, it has set the standard for what a quality folder should feel like. Hunters, cowboys, bikers, hikers…everyone knew the Buck 110 was the gold standard. Then Buck upped the game with S30V steel, micarda scales, a thumb-stud, and a pocket clip. Gold became platinum. About this particular series of 110 knives, it’s not for beginners or novice users. I’ve been using and collecting knives for over 60 years (I’m 72) and this knife does not come out of the box ready to flip-and-go. I can’t remember any other knife I’ve purchased that was this stiff. Not from poor workmanship, rather from extremely tight tolerances. FIRST, SHARPNESS: Occasionally, I’ll purchase a quality knife that arrives razor sharp. Meaning: it will shave arm hair with virtually ZERO PRESSURE. This one is such a knife. The old saying is, “A sharp knife is safer than a dull knife.” BUT, that only applies if you practice ALL of the safety rules. This one WILL bite you quickly. The tip is sharp enough you could use it to extract a splinter, rather than using a needle. CAUTION & PATIENCE! OPERATION: I purchased two 110 Hunters, one for myself and one for my grandson. I sat in a chair and opened and closed the blade RAPIDLY (the point was about 2” from the body when “open“) for about 5 minutes and then took a break…repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat…keep going 🤷🏻♂️😁. Occasionally, I added ONE small drop of REM Oil at the spot where the blade and spring meet. Emphasize: SMALL DROP. Use a needle oiler if you can. Immediately wipe off any excess oil with a cloth (I used a paper towel). After performing the above procedure about 10-15 times, I could snap the blade open 2 to 3 times out of 5 tries. Be patient. Rushing is just going to make you bleed. Remember it will shave with virtually no pressure, so pressure WILL puncture the skin…the amount of pressure will determine how deep. SCALES: I prefer nice wooden scales for looks, but this micarda has a good texture and gives it, as one reviewer said, “an earthy look.” Maybe someday I’ll make some scales, but for now, these are sufficient for a ranch knife. My grandson works full time on a ranch, and his will get used-and-abused. LOCK UP: When you finally get your knife broken in, it locks WITH AUTHORITY. It’s a heavy, deep-sounding snap and there’s no doubt you’re holding quality in your hand. Some reviews have expressed concern about one-handed closing. GO SLOW. It’s kinda the same principle as keeping your finger off of a trigger. That is, BARELY start the blade closing, then move them away from the blade’s path. Don’t keep them where the blade is going. Use your head and just GO SLOW (I think I already said that🧐😂😇). BOTTOM LINE: I’ve got knives that cost a lot more than this one, but none have such great, tight lock up and none came any sharper (I don’t know if you could get it any sharper). My high end Benchmade is more than double $$, and it is not this sturdy (but it is a beautiful work-of-art look). I can’t comment on whether the blade will hold an edge, but my other S30V’s do; I don’t expect this one to be any less effective. I fully expect a lifetime of use out of this knife, even for my grandson. KEEP a receipt. Buck is very good about their lifetime warranty.

Great update of a classic
If you like the 112 form factor and are willing to pay almost 2X for S30V, micarta, one-hand opening, pivot screw, pocket clip, and black aluminum bolsters, then you're gonna like this knife. However, if you haven't experienced this classic lockback, you need to know that there is quite a bit more handle than blade, and they aren't lightweight. This model is lighter than the original brass/wood version (5.9 vs 3.95oz), but it's still pretty chunky. Even though this knife opens one-handed, you cannot flip it open or closed. Occasionally I've forgotten this, a potentially dangerous mistake. I am a buck 110/112 fan and can say categorically this is the best version of the 112 I've ever owned. I'm putting the 110 Hunter Sport on my wishlist. These are super solid, classic knives. The one ding is that the knife didn't arrive as sharp as I would have liked. Five minutes on my Spyderco Sharpmaker (ending with the ultra-fine grit stones) got the S30V hair-poppin' sharp. S30V rocks.

Outstanding
Buck really nailed it with this model! I carried an OD Buck 422 during my tour in the Corps - a most reliable tool that served me well. In recent years, I've been looking for something similar. I've been watching the current 112 variants: slim, select, pros, etc. However, none really appealed to me. When I saw this more modern, higher-end take on the full-sized 112 with black and OD color scheme, and modern materials, I was quite pleased. This knife is rock solid! I enjoy the full thickness versus the slim version. It feels quite substantial in the hand. The micarta has a great feel/grip, as well. The blade deploys smoothly and locks up solid! I'm still not certain whether or not I will keep the clip on the knife. I hope the black aluminum will hold up with use, as the color scheme, while new, looks truly awesome. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. A fine American made product!
