Value = good price + quality product.
I mostly use Bayite (variety & high quality + low weight)But, these fit perfectly against the edge of many tin boxes,so they're perfect for small fire kits!(On their side, with other non-rattling items pushed againstthem & holding them in place, they won't rattle against thetin box - which is a big deal for a Tach pack set-up!)Discovered a good working Fire Kit set-up!using a hinged tin box, 4.5x3.3x0.9 inches:- 1 of these scrapers, against front long side;- 6-8 strips of char cloth (4x3") on the bottom;- Bayite ferro rod (3.14", w/ wire lanyard), center;- 4 Goldace hemp + wax rope (2 small/long side);- 10-14 Tinder-Quik fire tabs (bagged, center);- 12-14 (cotton + wax) fire tabs (loose, center);- Fernel lens (in plastic case) above all;- secured by HD rubber band (#94), length-wise.Fits easily into pocket of 5" or 8" tall Molle bags.Small, effective, inexpensive (per kit, comparedto other on-line kits), won't make noise!HINT: Tape/glue Fernel lens case to inside of lid.(Cut down lens case, to facilitate lens removal.)

Great to keep everywhere
Bought the small ferro rods to lace into my boot. Added one of these under the soles of each boot and I don’t worry about being able to start a fire.

File edge for a burr or it won’t spark on ferro rod
As with most stamped/painted metal this won’t work on a ferro rod (which is also shipped with a coating so it won’t accidentally spark) unless you file the edge to create a burr.

How to use this product efficiently the way it was designed.
These have been painted. The striker end is also painted. This prevents it from striking correctly.I take a lighter or a candle and burn the paint off the striker surface at the end for about 3 to 5 seconds. This will take off the paint so the striker is very sharp again. The sharper the better. Also the striker side must face down that’s where the edge is.1. When you strike the fero rod The striker side must be down.2. To know that you have the top of the striker up you will see the number 1:100000 on the top.3. Now go start a fire and have fun!

Steel is too soft to generate the necessary spark with a Ferro rod.
