101 Stories of the Great Ballets: the Scene-by-scene Stories of the Most Popular Ballets, Old and New

Was a gift for a friend and she loved it.

I thought this would be a book telling the stories of great ballets. Rather, it is a book giving each ballet a 1 page summary explanation of the ballets. It would be good as a primer before attending a performance. Not good for a girl who loves to read and was expecting more.

I love this book because I love the ballet. I like to read the ballet before I go. Sometimes it helps me more quickly identify the characters and sometimes it explains why the ballet story is a bit different from the fable or childhood story. I have given many as gifts.

I bought this book as a potential gift for a young girl taking dance lessons. It seemed to me to be a great history book, all text with no illustrations. I deemed it as unsuitable for it’s intended purpose and ordered a photo record of ballet dancers instead. This was well received.I appreciated the return desk at my local K-Mart. Amazon does look after it’s customers.

Being new to ballet, this is a good book to learn the history and themes of many ballets. It prepared me well to see, enjoy and understand my first ballets. A good long-term reference.

A definitive description of each of a large number of ballets - more of a reference book really, and reflecting the views of a well-known choreographer. For each ballet, there is also a brief introduction giving music/choreographer details and significant "first" performances. Bear in mind it was originally written in 1954 (but is no less valid for that).Also note, there are no illustrations.
