Iraq + 100: Stories from Another Iraq
E**R
Iraq in 2013
A collection of 10 stories by 10 award winning Iraqi writers all attempting to describe what their country will be like in 2103 in the words of editor Blasim "100 years after the disastrous American- and British lead invasion." Some time travel, some straight life in the future, some fantasy, some science fiction all well written. The star system is inaccurate only a few stories have graphic violence or sexual content.

This book is a good start for imagining the future of the Middle East
"How do we produce a vision that enables us to see beyond our immediate ordeals?" Robin D.G. Kelley wrote in his book "Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination". It is true for Africans in the diaspora and it is true for writers in the Middle East, especially the evolution happening as we speak in Iraq. This book is a good start for imagining the future of Iraq. From fantasy to sci-fi, to nearly everything in between, each story will give you something to think about. Is it the best book in the world? Nope. But like the old man said at the end of "The Wild Bunch" - "it'll do." What this book has going for it is that it is the only one of its kind for now. Would love for future books like this to have both the Arabic and English versions in the book. The book is bleak, so do not expect to jump for joy after reading each story, but here's hoping the future we write in our hearts bends the world to our goodwill. Lord willing, inshallah...

A book that got more and more boring.

A mix of pessimistic forward projection of current woes, even more unexpected woes, and just a little optimism.
An interesting collection. It is a little slow to start as some of the early stories only use a limited science fiction setting to simply focus much of the story looking directly back the present or past of Iraq in flash back, but things quickly pick up with a range of tales showing a mix of pessimistic forward projection of current woes, even more unexpected woes, and just a little optimism.
